I play fantasy/sf miniatures game, but I didn't get a history degree for nothing. I'd love to create an accurate Byzantine army and I've looked on the net and couldn't find anything. Occasionally I'd catch glimpses of Byzantine miniatures, but no hints on where to get them. Does anyone have any idea on where to start? (I could also do late Roman) Any help would be appreciated.

I have a question, what scale are you looking for? I've recently moved to 15mm and found them to often be exceptionally detailed for decent prices. It also lets you field massive armies.

15mm:

Wow, those look awesome. I'll probably go 28, but a huge 15mm sounds intriguing. Thanks for the info!

Thing about Byzantines is they were in action from about 500AD to 1453 AD and changed during that time.

It might be good to start with the Osprey books, to get an idea of the different styles of army and equipment.

I have been playing Byzantines for almost 20 years, and have several armies, in both 15 and 25mm scales. There is a forum for the Warrior gaming system, formally WRG-7 at http://www.fourhorsemenenterprises.com/forum/ There are a lot of people there with indepth knowledge on both the history and figures.

The WAB army book, Beyond the Golden Gate, provides army lists and background material for the 500 AD to 1453 AD period. You'll need to try and find it on Ebay as it is no longer in print.
