Hi Painting & Modeling section! It's nice to meet you.
I have a bazillion Hordes models to paint and I thought Saturday morning would be a pretty good time to undercoat a bunch of stuff. The first set, a plastic unit kit, went fine. Then I started on some metal models. Now, I want to say beforehand that I have sprayed numerous metal models before and not had a problem with them, including some of the same type of miniatures - these ones being Shifting Stones and a Stone Keeper.
So I put some gloves on, shook up the undercoat for a while, and started spraying. I got stopped short by what the paint was doing on the models. Instead of undercoating them properly, like you'd expect an undercoat to do, it was running into the recesses and staying there - it looked like I'd whacked a wash over them rather than an undercoat, with the non-recessed areas ending up mostly bare metal. I was pretty puzzled by this and the only thing that came to mind was that maybe I hadn't shaken the can enough, so I shook it up while counting out sixty seconds in my head. I tried again on another side of the models and the same thing happened. I wondered if it was something about the models, so I tried it on a druid and Wyrmwood and got the same result - the paint running into the detail and staying there instead of evenly covering the model.
What's the deal, dakka? It's 9º outside - is that cold enough to interfere with the paint mixing up properly? The only other thing I can think is mold release or something - I don't pre-wash them - but it was on a number of different models and I haven't seen the problem before even though pre-washing isn't a thing I've ever done.
