I've bought a couple of pens to do free handing work but they don't seem to hold the colour once dry. Can any of you wonderful dakkaians recommend any pens that will work?

+1 for Sakura Pigma. The ink stays wet for a while, since it can't soak in like it would on paper, but once it does dry, it's pretty resilient (archival ink - both waterproof and UV resistant). I actually consider the long (compared to a Sharpie, or something - we're still talking seconds, not minutes) dry time a boon, as it allows you to erase mistakes before they set.
