Hey Dakka,
I've had this problem with all the plastic glue I purchase. The glue kind of gets stuck in the needle and won't allow more flow through it. I've found I can remedy that by taking the needle out and putting it into a flame (aka from a lighter).
I'm wondering what I can do to stop it from clogging up in the first place or if there is a better way of getting it unclogged.

Your way of unclog it is good, I do that all the time.

It clogs because you probably leave the metal thing without the ... thingie that covers it (major blank, I really don't remember how it's called). If you cover it after you use, it shouldn't clog that much times.

I do use the sheaf on the needle, I've usually got a a paper towel on hand and wipe it off before I sheaf it too. Not sure what else I could do.

It's the nature of the beast. Seal it up quickly when you are done and that will help mitigate the problem. Your way of clearing the nozzle (provided it is a metal nozzle and not a plastic one) is the best way I have found.

If yours doesn't come with a wire (like the one above) I've found that common old fuse wire (10amp) will fit down the spout and do the job.

As will the wire from twist-ties after you strip the paper/plastic off them.
