I'll Be Back

Hey guys, i need to pick your brains here...
I am just starting out with 40k and i need a well rounded list from the Dark Vengeance box...
It comes with
- HQ Character Kranon
- Hellbrute
- 6 "Chosen" which i guess are like Chaos Terminators
- 20 Cultists
What should i add here? I would look at the codex but i dont have one for them and i am not near a store to look at one.
Any help appreciated...
Automatically Appended Next Post: I was also looking into getting the CSM Battleforce for the CSM Troop choice w/ the rino, is anything else in that battleforce helpful?

Get the codex, read it. Hopefully it will give you an opinion on what you want to go for. Themed, competitive, fluffy..

Really you need to get a codex and have a look at it. Also what sort of army are you looking to collect Are you looking to be competitive or do you just want to get the figures you like?
The CSM battleforce is pretty good. Everything in there is useful except for the possessed marines.

Designate those chosen models as your aspiring champions. Buy regular marines & paint them green to turn them into plague marines. If you buy battle force, sell or trade possed & khorne beserkers. Other wise mix & match the models to create generic plague marines by not using khorne beserker heads & filing off mark of khorne. Keep the wings for future lords. Turn kranon into a lord with MoN and pow sword & skip the plasma pistol.
May want to use green stuff to remodel the helbrute into a daemon prince.
If you like cultist, I recommend you buy imperial guard instead & work torwards an ally detachment of imperial guard instead of cultist. Either model maybe used vice versa.
Somebody will tell you to get heldrakes. I found that spawns are a decent substitute, instead of killing power, they have staying power.

Having recently been through the same ordeal. Get a codex (as stated above). After that proxy things in 500 or 1000 point games and see what you like. Also look for FAQ online, it will change how you set certain things up.
A heldrake isn't a bad investment , but if you play with other new players, they will complain endlessly about how its overpowered. I have never run a daemon prince. In my group it would disappear first turn every time wings or not.
Spawn are indeed awesome if you do them right. Maybe buy a biker and some chaos marines and dress a biker up to look spiffy with bits off the Champion sprue and use him as your lord. Or you could pretend the lord has a jump pack for now. Either way spawn make an unparalleled bodyguard. Make them nurgle as Filch suggested.
Noise Marines are pretty good too. 10 man squad with 2 blastmasters works nicely for taking out light/medium armor, Marines, and any light infantry.

Getting your hands on a Codex is absolutely Step 1; if you can pick up the main rulebook as well.
Dark Vengeance (it's how I started my army) gives you the following:
HQ - Chaos Lord
Troop - Chaos Cultists
Elite - Helbrute, Chosen (Chosen are a specific unit type, terminators are different)
From the battleforce the CSM troop and the Rhino are definitely worth it, but if you spend time reading around here you'll learn the possessed and the khorne beserkers aren't very popular in 6th edition, as some people feel they aren't competitive models. Do the math on what you want, what you'll use, and what you won't.
As previous posters have mentioned, read through the codex/rulebook, play vs some friends, definitely proxy models and units until you learn what you like and how you want to play. 500, 750 and eventually 1000 as you pick up models are good lists to run with. The Codex will show you everything you need to decide what to play, and the rulebook will show you how to play it.
Starting from the same point as you I've added a unit of plague marines, a unit of noise marines, a daemon prince (don't bother, not worth the points and there are better options), and a unit of terminators. Everything aside from the DP has been working for my play style thus far, because I played with proxy models until I learned what I liked, and this was it.
Put a little research and forethought into your future model acquisitions, and you'll be winning games with a grin on your face in no time!

Oh and if you enjoy it, I might start thinking about magnetizing some of the arms, particularly if you don't plan to use the same setup twice. It is time consuming but it could save some $ in the long run, as you won't need to have a million extra guys with the special weapons. Just stick with using small magnets for the hands and guns for starters though.

I used magnets & I realize now that I would much rather pin the arms with paper clips and filling the cavity with greenstuff. Some of the magnets I put backwards so it ended up repelling. Also neodymium magnets are just too expensive. U can get away with cheapo black magnets for big models such as predator tanks.
I was going to magnetize my heldrake but I am glad I pinned the limbs together. I used two pins to prevent it from spinning.

Huh, never thought of that. I split my magnets with someone else so we got a fairly large number for not too much. But one way or the other I recommend making weapons modular early on if you intend to play for a while. Saves on having a guys modeled with a heavy bolter, 1 plasma gun and a flamer in the squad and having to remember who actually has what.

Oh, and about that helbrute as a dp. It seems as though neither are popular so i would just trade it or sell it, but b4 you do try out a rifle dread by attaching coffee straws to the multimelta and affixing gargoyle muzzels from a rhino kit. This will turn it into a tl lc. Then you can march it to the middle of the board and hope it draws away fire from other units. Exaggerate how it became crazed and unloaded 3 shots and destroyed a model if you want to deter shots at it.
