Tyranid Biomass Pools. I am currently spicing up my Ripper Swarm bases with nice little sections of a biomass pool using my secret ingredients...1 drop of green food coloring, and standard Elmer's glue. Now, the problem lies in the fact that this stuff is not drying at proper thickness or color. So, anyone got any ideas? It's drying thin and dark, rather than the vibrant green that it is upon mixing.

No JB Plastiweld putty: So, no putty, and no green/yellow in the area. Any alternatives?

"There is a cancer eating at the Imperium. With each decade it advances deeper, leaving drained, dead worlds in its wake. This horror, this abomination, has thought and purpose that functions on an unimaginable, galactic scale and all we can do is try to stop the swarms of bioengineered monsters it unleashes upon us by instinct. We have given the horror a name to salve our fears; we call it the Tyranid race, but if is aware of us at all it must know us only as Prey."

Decided to shrink this down to the more important questions. Please comment so I can get some ideas.

If you used GW plastic glue, or any brand of superglue, then I have faith that the models will come apart mostly clean.

Here in the UK I like to use Fairy Power Spray.. but whatever you have around for stripping the paint work...
Super glue is weakened with freezing, so pop those bits in the freezer and the will probably fall apart.. if not be easier to just break apart.
The plastic glued parts, are supposed to be permanently bonded... I found that GW plastic glue didnt do that and every join could be snapped off with ease tbh. Try it on as much as you can before paint stripping, and again on whats left after stripping. odd bits might actually have bonded right and be really stuck!
The pva is easy to get up, strip those too, allthough its abit tougher than the paint is with the method i use, it goes all soft and will peel up easy, previous basing material i consider lost, little bits of model or resin basing details cna be saved though... flocks and sands etc just scrap them in the messy state theyre in and do a fresh one.
cant comment about theme.. i dont know what models your talking about

Editsome nice products for basing enitre armies can be found in the art store, in the acrylic mediums.. most of the brands do texture mediums. There approximatly the same thing as the GW texture paints, only theyre colourless... to be mixed with or over painted, and come in usable sized bottles instead of 12ml joke pots. With a variety of textures. I use Windsor and Newton Galeria Mineral Texture Gel, Slate (sourced from my front garden and smashed with a hammer.. fortunate for me i suppose), sand, a box of assorted pieces from the bits box, chopped up to provide identifiable 40k debris here and there. gets me a ruined battlefield rubble kind of effect that im comfortable with

In the US, get some Super Clean or Purple Power. They are basically the same and chew through paint and super glue and basing glue with no problem. with the super glue they tend to help it separate from the plastic almost entirely so if it doesn't fall off while stripping, you can pop it right off when it comes out. PVA won't be able to hold up at all to the stuff, comes right off.

When in doubt, seal it with a coat of thinned down PVA glue. In my opinion, the the primer/paint would be enough to protect everything.

Rot and decay can only take place in the presence of oxygen. Which is why wooden piles are used as supports under water. If the wood stays under water, it's effectively sealed and it doesn't rot.

To get this to work for you, make sure to put a solid/even/complete coat or two of PVA on any organic elements prior to painting. That plus a couple layers of cured acrylic paint film and a good coat or two of varnish should provide the seal you need to preserve those elements for hundreds of years.

That's the best I was hoping for. Now, any suggestions on working with mulch? I have been thinking about using long slender chunks for rock outcroppings for my gargoyles to perch on.

If they're being stored in a cool dry place, you basically don't have to worry. Unsealed antique wooden items have survived thousands of years when not left outside.

I didn't even think of that. Out of curiosity, where would you guys hazard a guess as to picking up some decorative bark and such? I'm aiming for the thin kind to cut down on space.

fyi - pistachio shells (not the meat) basically don't "rot". I found some around a decade old in/under my grandfathers chair when cleaning out his house.

Same place you would find any gardening supplies: Home Depot or Lowes... Look for bark mulch nuggets; a big bag of it costs about $5 and will last you forever. This guy was based with bark mulch if you are curious about how it looks. If you want something bigger, look for reptile habitat wood or cork bark at a pet store.

Thanks Scoot, and that mini looks beautiful. Much the same look I am hoping for, though with a red desert theme. I am hoping to use the nuts for Hormagaunt eggs, and the bark for that rock look. The only problem i am having now is figuring out what look to give my Gargoyle perches.

This would probably be seen better in it's own thread.

That said, for water effects stuff I like Envirotex Lite. It's a two part clear epoxy that can be tinted easily. It will dry in thin or thick layers depending on what you want.

Where do you get something like this, and how much does it normally cost you, and for what size?

Most art and craft stores at around $10. Just google it for a ton of links.
