Hello all I am kinda new to 40k. I have Dark Vengeance but I feel overwhelmed by the rules sometimes, I am trying to learn with my 11yo son.
If we can understand the rules we are going to start our own armies. Me Necrons, Him Tyranids.
I live in southern Oklahoma (which is a 40k dead-zone as far as I know) and am hoping to maybe build a table and get others into it.

I am a nobody trying to tell anybody about a somebody that can save everybody

Hi painface, welcome to Dakka.

You've picked up a decent set with DV so persevere and you should find 40k a rewarding experience with your son.

Being British I don't know squat about Oklahoma outside of the musical (should I admit that? ) but a quick look on Dakka's Store finder shows quite a few stores in Southern Oklahoma and a Games Workshop store in Oklahoma City (and Dallas if your really far south!).

Wargaming communities seem to be largely based around stores in the US and I would suggest that you should find a visit to a GW store most rewarding as they run very good introduction games of 40K, that's not to say the independent store don't but the GW ones definitely will. Give them a call if you are near and they should be able to hook you up.

Good luck, I hope your son and you enjoy your journey into wargaming.

Hello!

Sounds like we are in similar positions, my 13yo son and I have recently started playing -basically the DV set with a few extras added so far. We are also working to learn the rules while having fun. It can be overwhelming. I feel fortunate that I have a number of local hobby as well as GW stores close by me here in North Dallas. I'm only 45 minutes from the OK border. Depending on where you are in Southern OK, you might consider a road trip to the Dallas area for some good gaming etc. private message me if this is an option you want to explore.

Great start with Dark Vengeance. You know, you could always hang on to those Angels as they equate to about 500pts (minus the Master). Great for small point games (5 man squads for the TACs, 5 termies, 3 bikers, Librarian).

The rules may seem overwhelming, but it's 3 phases:

Movement (move all of your troops)
Shooting (Shoot whoever can shoot from where you moved)
Assault (Attack hand-to-hand if you want)

That's about it. After that, you're learning what the special rules of each unit and their weapons are. Some units have special rules that affect or happen during those three phases. Hang on to that rulebook, it's golden. It has all of the rules you need, and doesn't cost $75 like the hardcover version with all of the extra stuff you don't need to start playing.
