I've been having trouble against a tau army that consists of: a ton of fire warriors, an ethereal, kroot, pathfinders, a riptide, and crisis suits with a commander. This is what I was thinking:

Rune Priest: Runic armor, master of runes, chooser of the slain, jotww, fotws-- 180pts
Rune Priest: Chooser of the slain, LL, sc--110 pts

5 Wolf Scouts: 2 plasma pistols, melta gun --115 points

9 grey hunters: plasma gun, motw, ws, rhino--205 points
10 grey hunters: 2 plasma guns, motw, ws, rhino-- 220 points

6 long fangs: 2 lascannons, 3 missile launchers-- 170 points

1000 points total

The scouts outflank and the rune priest with LL stays with long fangs. When the crisis commander comes, he will use storm caller for the save.

This is just what I was thinking. I'm open to any and all suggestions because nothing I've done so far has really worked
Thanks!

Your troops look ok. Long fangs are probably ok.

Master of Runes is a waste of points. Just keep your Rune priests cheap. Like this...

Rune Priest + Chooser of the Slain (110)
Rune Priest (100)

Right away, that saves you 80 points. Spend some of that to max out your first Grey Hunter squad with 10 dudes. Then maybe pick up a lone wolf.

I'm not sure what you expect to accomplish with the wolf scouts. In principle, "Operate Behind Enemy Lines" sounds fantastic, but in practice it's really not that good. Here's some reasons why.

First, if your opponent has a quad gun, he's going to ruin your day because "Interceptor" allows the gun to shoot at models arriving from reserve. That means you'll have to eat 4 twin linked S7 AP4 shots before you get to do anything.

Second, in a 1000 point game, there's a really good chance that your opponent won't have many units close to his table edge by the time your scouts arrive. When the armies are small, most of the units tend to move to the center. So it's possible that your scouts (with a range of 12") won't be able to shoot at anything until turn 3 or 4.

Third, units of 5 marines are pretty fragile - and scouts don't wear power armor so this is especially true for them. After you get your one round of shooting, there is a very good chance that a single round of shooting will rout them.

So I don't think you should be spending 10% of your points on this unit that *might* do something important, but probably wont. A better choice would be a unit that can always influence the battle, even if that influence is small. For example,

Spoiler:

6 Long Fangs + 5 Heavy Bolters (115)

Heavy Bolters don't have a high AP or a super high Strength, but they DO have a 36" range and a rate of fire of 3. So they need to be respected by your opponent. But best of all, they will be shooting at something every single turn until your opponent deals with them.

In contrast, the scouts can't arrive until at least turn 2 and then they have to hunt for a target. Even if they find one and destroy it, their limited range means this is all they can reasonably hope to accomplish. If the Long Fangs destroy a target, they'll easily find another within range without having to move.

Thanks for the input. The goal of the scouts is to get his crisis suit commander. His commander annihilates my troops so I need to take him out. I can definitely try the squad of heavy bolters instead though because I haven't been effective against him yet. Thanks for the help!

Honestly, I'm not digging the Wolf Scouts. Plasma Pistols are too expensive for what they provide. I'd ditch the Wolf Scouts entirely as well as Master of Runes (its garbage for the point cost) and the Chooser of the Slain and Runic Armor from that first Rune Priest.

Bam! That's 195 points. Take a third Grey Hunter pack. Make it an 8 man setup like your 9 man Grey Hunter pack but with a Flamer. Stick the JotWW/FotWS Rune Priest there. Bump up the 9 man to 10 man and get yourself a second Plasma Gun for free.

28 Grey Hunters is a lot to deal with at 1000 points, and you still have the Long Fangs and Rune Priests supporting them.

Yep. But my vote is still for the heavy bolters. S5 AP4 will gimp fire warriors like nobody's business. 15 shots at a range of 36", 3+ ToHit, 2+ ToWound and no armor save!

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to give that new list a shot. Do you prefer to take rhinos or drop pods
