Anyone here a player of Space Station 13? Got into it about a week back, and I think it's pretty awesome. It's a fairly RP oriented game, multiplayer, where you play as the crew of a space station with some twists...Ever wanted to be a Geneticist, struggling hard to break God's beautiful work by experimenting on monkeys and giving yourself xray vision, super strength and telekinesis? This is the game for you! Or a Security Officer, diligently watching for crime whilst receiving abuse, harassment and constant acusations of mistreatment of murderers? Or even a Clown, frustrating the crew of the ship to the point where multiple people scream for vengeance and your death...Best hope the offficer you just tripped is forgiving.

The main focus of each round of the game is seeing just how badly things will go wrong. There are a variety of ways your bad luck can manifest itself, including but not limited to traitors leaving bombs everywhere, the gravitational singularity used for power getting loose and devouring your station, the AI facing a critical error that makes it decide none of the crew deserve life or pets, the Space Wizard Federation being angered by a crew member, or just good old space aliens laying eggs in your brain. Admins who monitor various servers keep it interesting, and prevent random no reason slaughter or griefing.

I've probably left out critical information somewhere, but I do wholeheartedly suggest you try the game if you haven't before. There's tons of cool mechanics and hidden bits and pieces to find, and many a good story can be created. I play on /tg/ server for those who already play, links to relevant information below.

For those who can't get past the irritating UI, horrible client or slightly strange graphics, a few remakes are in the works.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. It's worth noting the wiki is a bit out of date, and that the wiki I've provided is unique to /tg/ server - each server runs of slightly different code with different teams of coders.

Keep in mind that there's several SS13 severs and each one has a different map, different rules, different level of roleplay, etc.

I found that the /tg/station, oddly enough, was the best balance in terms of gameplay and roleplay.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Likewise. I shall take some time to peruse that wiki, if only to get a better idea of what all of this is about...
There seems to be a rather high amount of potential in this.

And humour. The shitcurity rules sound like a guide to the Inquisition or Adeptus Arbites.

Yeah, my two other attempts at playing on servers were unsuccessful, although probably this is because I was already schooled in /tg/ station ways...Baystation has admins and style that vexed me, and Goonstatiom, whilst admittedly possessed of the most dedicated coder team, had a player base I couldn't like. Do you still play on /tg/ station?

As a note to people just getting into this, don't let this put you off other servers - what works horribly for one person may be fantastic for another.

Baystation is roleplay heavy, while goonstation is... well, no roleplaying at all.

Neither one worked for me. The strict roleplay rules of baystation often made no sense whatsoever, for example.

Yeah, the Security can sometimes be highly interesting in their methods...my personal favourite was the Warden who took all the prisoners in permanent imprisonment and allowed them to fight in a gladiator style for their freedom. One prisoner kept volunteering to fight again and again, and kept winning.

Interrogation is also terrifying.

Indeed - the Baystation admins have very firm ideas of how traitors operate, some of which defeated the whole point for me, and netted me a ban.

Not just traitors, but also loyalists. The captain, for example, basically sits around picking his nose and other bodily orifices all day.

I think ultimately I'd like to try out Security, but apparently it's better to get to know the game with something easier first.

Also, the Janitor sounds way too hilarious to not give it a try at least once. ;P

I prefer Scientist, because it's so ill-defined that you can do almost anything. Including blow up the station (or hand out bombs to let someone else do it).

Any critical tips for the beginner (outside the ones in the wiki of course)?

Okay, I had some hilarious experiences so far.

The first thing I witnessed was a pair of Geneticists stealing the monkeys from the neighbouring Virology Dept. because they wanted to breed slimes and needed something for them to feed on.
Then a Chaplain tried to kidnap someone and drag him to church, apparently to lock him into one of the coffins. A team of redshirts alerted by a witness smashed the windows and handcuffed the guy before trying to bring him in for questioning. Along the way, the entire group slipped on wet floor and I promptly heard a furious "fething janitor! " over /say. The Chaplain tried to run, but the heroic redshirts quickly dogpiled on him and clubbed him in a way that left a huge blood stain on the ground when they dragged him away. Arriving at the Security Office, the Chaplain tried to kiss the Head of Security and was promptly tasered into submission. Meanwhile, another Security Officer reported a dead guy floating past the window, but he suspected incompetence rather than murder as the dead person only wore a breathing mask rather than a proper EVA suit.
The last incident I checked out was over at Robotics, where a team of technicians apparently tried to turn someone into Robocop. One guy radio'd his superior, asking how he was supposed to get written consent from someone who had no arms.

That's just what I ghost-observed in a single round, though. I'll probably try a real character next time I find some time for this game.

Does dakka hang out on a specific server, or ...?

On a sidenote, I'm surprised at the amount of customisation. The server I was on even had options for "Adam Jensen hair" or "Kusanagi hair".

This is really cool, I'll have to check this out. /tg/ always gets a bad rap but they can be a really good group when they get their gak together. Most /tg/ server's I played on in other games have been pretty good, so hopefully this one will be the same.

At the very least I'll watch a few rounds and get a good laugh out of it.

The most chaotic round I ever witnessed was one in which the engineer unleashed the vortex of doom 5 minutes into the round. It sucked in the emergency shuttle, so everyone dogpiled into EVA suits and legged it.

Written consent from someone with no arms...Oh my. /tg/ server is my current hangout, on Badger-station, as it's known. The other server for /tg/, Sybil, is far more populated, but I prefer Badger for that reason. That, and Badger admins do the best events. I think Melissia has indicated that she plays on /tg/, but aside from that, I do not know.

So long as you pay attention to the rules, you should be good. I didn't even do that (I know, bad form), and I came out alright after my first few rounds. Observing a couple of rounds is a good idea - you'll pick up a lot, and probably come away with a story akin to Lynata's.

Most of /tg/'s bad eggs seem to have stayed away from this server. I say this, knowing I'll instantly be proven wrong as the misogyny and vitriol rise to the surface on your first look at the server...Bah.

I don't know what scares me more - seeing nuke ops knocking at my window, or the cries of "Lord Singuloth just ate escape!" over the radio.

I was a security guy for that round, and someone banged me on the head, stole my gun, and welded in the door. Then got sucked in by the singularity. I awoke to welded door, got a spacesuit and EVAed around the back of engineering.

I also saw someone make space Kuzu. That was interesting.
