Pretty simple question here:

Can you fire a Torrent weapon at a vehicle, but only place a tiny fraction of the template over the vehicle in order to hit a unit behind said vehicle? We've got a bit of a fight going on at our FLGS about it, as one of our players claims that Torrent overrides the Template requirement to cover as much of the vehicle as possible, due to the Torrent rule saying you place the template and THEN treat as a Template weapon. Essentially, he's going for the "I already placed it, you can't make me move it after Iplaced it, because the rule says 'then'."
I've pointed out that Torrent only changes the requirements for placing the narrow end of the template from "B2B fir firer" to "Within 12"...", to no avail. WWYD?

I would honestly take that as the small part being pinned in place(treating it as the front of the flamer for example), and from there applying template rules with rotation, while making sure it remains in compliance with other rules of what part must be closer.

Put another way: Fat end barely covering, sure, middle just barely touching, not so much.

Reread Page 52 about how Template weapons interact with vehicles, this should clear it up.

The problem is that torrent allows you to place the template in a completely different method then normal, so the argument has merit. As you are required to follow the methods and limitations spelled out by the torrent section of the rule book, instead of the normal method of placing the template, you are not bound by the original limitations. It even states in the torrent rule that you follow this rule before any outlined in the template section of the rule book: Only after it is placed do you treat it like any other template weapon.

I would say it is an oversight, and the original limitations should still be in place, but permission to ignore the standard limitations has been granted by an alternative placement method.
