We have a lovely little trip down memory lane on Tale of Painters today. I do a full unboxing review of 2nd edition. So if you want to feel all nostalgic or maybe you missed out when it was first released be sure to check it out.

That was a pleasure to read, thanks for sharing! It would be even better if you did a follow-up battle report with the forces from the box set using 2nd ed rules!

I've got this box somewhere. The supplemenatry materials, especially the Codex Imperialis and Wargear books, are fascinating. A friend of mine bought Dark Vengeance when it came out and the complete lack of anything like that, just the rulebook and a few other bare-bones materials, was so disappointing to see...

Driven away from WH40K by rules bloat and the expense of keeping up, now interested in smaller model count games and anything with nifty mechanics.

I bought this when I was a kid after seeing a pic in Inquest magazine of a 40k game. I was pretty disappointed. The models were awful!

I love it how the "space orks" and the "grechen" are totally different and separate entities. Also the array of cardboard templates in that book boggles the mind.

I agree with the painting guide. It pretty much goes from "rough but tabletop ready" to "studio quality (in 2nd edition)" in one inexplicable step.

Lastly, I second the motion for a classic battle report. I've got to see this.

Like watching other people play video games (badly) while blathering about nothing in particular? Check out my Youtube channel: joemamaUSA!

Thirded.

Also, yes. The photography was much better back then. Then again, the current GW house photographers are truly awful. ><

Ahh, the days when Orks were called Space Orks. I actually bought a 2nd edition set around the mid 90's. Wish I still had it. Awesome review!

I loved this set. This, and the Titan Legions box set with the Imperator Titan datasheet which took up half a table. Controlling that thing was an entire game in itself...

I have to ask Gareth, how are the yellow-gold bits on the ultramarines painted. I thought it was NMM but you said it wasn't.

I painted the yellow with Averland Sunset, then Yriel Yellow. Then I glaze shade it with wild rider red. Just mix in loads of lahmian median to make the glaze.

I still have this box (and most of its contents). Used it to transport my army around back in the day when an army could still fit in a box that size.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

God, I truly wish I could get ahold of one of these boxes for the nostalgia value alone. Luckily, you can get the meat of the rules online as "Battle Bibles", and I am looking forward to playing such an old gem with my buddy just with all-new models. First up will definitely be my modern-sculpted vanilla Space Marines versus Orks. How could it be anything but?

I feel like I will have to use this image and make a card stand-up to properly play my first game of 2nd edition with the modern sculpts of Orks, though........

Thanks for that. It has a great effect.

Yeah, that was a great trip down memory lane. I still have all the rulebooks from back then but I can only imagine how awesome it must have felt to actually break open a brand new 2nd edition box set.
