Hi,

inspired by the recent Eldar release, I decided to dig up some space elves from my stash and give them a new paintjob. I want to update my Eldar to match my current painting standards and I would like your comments on the colour scheme before I go any further.

Absolutely wonderful I really like your color scheme, keep it up!

Those highlights look pretty good! The robes ones are simple but good looking.

My biggest complain is the warlock 1 sword. It looks a bit flat and bland compared to the other guys. But then again, I don't kniw how to improve it myself... Maybe shading it s bit from the middle to he bottom,

Oh, and any reason for one the guardians having the helmet color's reversed? I prefer the other style, white mask, black helmet.

Great work!

Hit the sword with agrax mudwash, then blend it up with bleached bone and then to skull white at the tip and it will not look flat anymore.

Otherwise fantastic looking models.

I wouldn't probably hit the black with a black wash just to tone down the grey highlights and make them less harsh, otherwise looking good.

Simple and effective. The grey highlights on the black are clean, and the white is solid - I wish I could get my white to come out like that.

Out of curiousity, what color did you prime them?

Thanks for the comments! Here are my own thoughts, based on yours:

Black robes: I expected the dip to tone down the highlight and I wanted a bit off-black anyway, therefore no black wash prior dipping. I did consider it, though. Maybe I will add a mid-layer or two to smooth the highlights for next batch. I have two Farseers and 5 Warlocks waiting for undercoat (skull white, by the way) plus some more hidden in my closet. I did collect Ulthe Strike force back in the days of Codex: Craftworld Eldar and Eye of Terror, but didn't paint a lot of them back then.

I have to consider simple freehand lines or transfers to make the robes more interesting for the next batch.

Black armour: Happy with it, currently.

Wraithbone: As with black, I expected a stronger shading from the dip. I'll see what I can do with this.

Gems: I think I'll skip the red glaze which fades the highlights, and blackline the gems away from wraithbone better with Agrax Earthshade or similar.

Inverted colours for helmets etc: The colour scheme is inspired by studio Ulthwé army, which has inverted colours here and there. It will feature mostly on my Seer Council (like the two warlocks seen here), but on random guardians as well. The Guardians shown here were previously painted 10 years ago and therefore intended for test figures, I wanted to try both helmet options on them. My own addition is white kneepads, which will feature on some models (but not consistently).

Basing: Base trim was originally darker but I didn't like it. The current is Steel Legion Drab. I would like to try out one shade lighter, but it might start to clash with the wraithbone. For the grass tufts I tried a few colours, but these were my favourite.

Modelling and conversions: Future guardians will feature small ammo bags and holsters borrowed from lesser races. I think cut down Space Marine ammo bags should match the ones sculpted on Warlocks, Farseers and classic Rangers. Actually some of these guardians already have them, but they are not visible in pics.

The Warlocks and Farseer were undercoated white, the Guardians were painted over 10-year old black-ish Ulthwe paintjob. The future models will be undercoated white, at least for infantry.

The white areas are painted first, because to get smooth coverage you need to be messy. They have been basecoated Pallid Wych Flesh and highlighted with by adding equal amount of Ceramite White it to it. The key for smooth coverage here is wetbrushing.

The black areas are then basecoated Charadon Granite (my favourite colour), followed by highlights of Adeptus Battlegrey and Codex grey. Two Foundation paints there, thankfully I hoarded multiple pots of both when they were discontinued .

First off, great call using that classic Farseer. One of GW's best models ever, in my opinion! All the models look nice.

The bone looks great. I wouldn't change it. The black robes could maybe use an additional edge highlight, or else a bit darker blend between grey and black. My black recipe is similar to yours, although I then do a thin wash of Badab Black to try it together. So a wash/glaze of black may do the trick. Sounds like you already have a nice idea for tweaking the gems.

You could always feather and blend your highlights more, but from your demeanor and work quality, I suspect you already know that.

In terms of color and composition, I really like them. Black is hard to do well and you've done a good job with it. You're not forcing too many colors in there and you've assembled them with a minimum of kibble. I'd be more than happy to have an army painted to that standard. The yellow bits on the warlocks are nice.

Very well, I like them. On the table top, they will look great since your highlighting is purposely (IMHO) exagerated.
