Hey,

I recently played a game against a friend who ran Nids for the first time. We played a 1250 point list, and his was roughly as follows:

x2 Hive Tyrants with wings
x2 Tervigons
x1 Trygon

And lots of Gants

I had:

Chaos Terminator Lord with Black Mace
5 Terminators with combi-plasma

x10 Noise Marines with 2 Blastmasters in a Rhino

x10 Chaos Cultists
x1 Base Chaos Lord

x1 Hellbrute with Lascannon

x1 Forgefiend

x1 Heldrake with Baleflamer

We played Purge the Alien, so it was all about killpoints. Basically, he kept everything but the Tervigons and gants in reserve, and he marched them up the field. He was fairly lucky, and created about 13 each turn from each Tervigon until turn 4, when he finally rolled two sets of doubles. His turn two, everything arrived from reserves and punched me right in my backfield. My Drake arrived late, and it eventually made it through a turn before getting destroyed by a tyrant.

I got trounced. In hindsight, he misplayed one of the synapse rules regarding FNP, and gave all gants within 12' the ability instead of one unit. Also, I forgot about the Daemon aspect of the black mace, which may have helped me a little bit, I'm really not sure how I can take down ALL of those wound 6 creatures. I recently converted some Obliterators, and I have 3 Chaos Bikers, so hopefully I can incorporate those into my next list, which will probably be 1500 points. I think he is going to add a Tyranofex.

I know this is fairly vague, but any general tactics against the Nids using my units would be great. Im thinking about buying a Winged Daemon Prince if that would help destroy some of the Monstrous creatures in CC.

I was going to recommend getting as many flamers to roast his hordes but you said he has more mc.

For mc, I recommend:

Csm+5, 2 plasma guns, melta bomb champ, rhino, combi plasma-220

Or swap that 2nd plasmagun for ac. Keep rhino to redeploy away.

Havocs, 4 ac-115

Take as many plasmaguns and auto cannons.

I would avoid taking forge fiends with hades ac, predator+side lascannon since mc get smash.

Also plague marines have plague knives to wound on a 4+ regardless of toughness.

PM, 2 plasmagun-150 and recommend a rhino

I'm a little surprised you lost so badly. Tervigons are a huge liability in purge games, as he's basically generating easy kill points for you.

In any case, the list you brought is going to have serious difficulties with any monstrous creatures, much less several of them. The combi-plasma terminators are a good start, but the rest of your list doesn't follow through. Thankfully, this is rather easy to fix.

For example, with nothing more than swapping out that generic lord in favor of a sorcerer, you've got some nasty anti-MC psychic powers and, more importantly, a force weapon. Buy it a 4++ and/or terminator armor and an extra level or two and you should be able to pack a nasty surprise, especially if you go fishing for iron arm. Failing that, a murder sword would be a great addition.

Otherwise, if you're willing to shake things up a bit more, I'd try and find some points for a lascannon predetor, or better yet, a land raider for those terminators.

In any case, once you up-gun your list a bit, you should have fewer problems.

Thanks for the replies.
Like I said, the misused FNP basically gave all of his mobs FNP, so that would have made my life slightly easier in response to earning some easy kill points.
How should I deal with the flyers? Vector strike and a mass of fire?
Also, would a maulerfiend match up against some of his baddies?
I appreciate the responses.

Take a adl+quad gun. Put havocs+4 ac in it. Support it with cultist or more havocs.

Your heldrakes template is str 6 so any fnp on t3 gants don't get fnp in 6th. Also only the tervigons have w6. If he keeps spawning gants just keep killing them. Or kill the tervigons and the gants within six inches die as well.

Trygons also have 6 wounds. I play nids and my friend plays CSM quite often. Most of the time it is a tough matchup but the biggest threat is plasma. Plague marines are actually very effective in CC vs MC. They can also carry a pair of PG. You likely don't need two lords. Stock up on PG. Obliterators are versatile as well. They can flame, assault cannon, lascannon and plasma cannon so get your self a ADL and quad gun. Take pot shots at fliers. You just want to cause grounding checks. Tyrants have only 4 wounds. The grounding usually takes care of 1. He will eventually drop.

It is tough seeing that many MC coming at you, especially if they have Iron arm and are casting FnP around. Keep your distance. Get plasma and let him come to you and back away. Helldrakes don't worry me at all. If I see you flaming 5 point gaunts with your 170 pts flyer go for it. You want to take a single wound off my tervigon, I don't mind. The vector strike is the real killer.

Would it be worthwhile to utilize a Slaaneshi DP psyker with Sensory Overload?

Fly around vectoring targets and using the power to try and cripple a target for a turn and maybe stack a few wounds.
