The restriction to an Avatar is that it is one per detachment, so does that mean with 2000 pts, double force chart, I can have two Avatars in seperate detachments? Would someone suggest doing this? I think this is just awesome, but awesome and practical aren't always the same. Is it competitive?

Yes, you can have 2 avatars.
Competitive?
Eh...
The Eldar have plenty of FANTASTIC HQ choices, I don't think that the avatar can compete.

The Avatar is plain awesome.
I've only started using him recently, but the guy is pretty darn imposing.
5 WS10 attacks at AP2, initiative 10 is damn strong. And the guy has 6 wounds, so even if you opponent shoots everything at him (and he will, people fear the Avatar), he's likely to survive.
The fearless bubble does help quite a bit. Guardians with Ld8 is pretty meh, the avatar makes them immovable.
Pro-tips for the avatar. Challenge out the characters when you charge. Depending on what you're in combat with, you want to win on your opponents turn. Remember that the avatar is a character. Assign strikes to models when you roll a 6 to hit. Get rid of that powerfist/axe/meltabomb guy before they strike. Always take fast shot. Two meltashots usually means an exploded vehicle, or two dead infantry. Remember that you're immune to melta/flamers etc. Watch out for plasma. That's what they get you with
Also, remember that he's fleet and has battlefocus. The avatar is now much faster than he used to be. Get him into combat ASAP!

Agreed, but the mental stress on the opponent to kill them turn one, will be a huge distraction to them. If you throw in 2 sword lords, or Decked out wraithlords, then it could be intimidating

Most definitely!
I actually have a local tournament at 2,500 points in 2-3 months time. I would like to take a list that includes; two Avatars, two wraithlords, a wraithknight, and 3 Wave Serpents. Everything else is in reserve.
I think that's where the Avatar shines. With multiple other tough threats, and a bunch of eldar on foot to gain fearless. Pretty much playing Eldar like they are MC Nids.

How does he compare to other beatstick characters in duels? Swarmlord, Abaddon, etc?

It is true, that he is good at combat. However, he might not be as good as them. But with disarming strike, he can downgrade one weapon to a close combat weapon which makes him so much better. The problem is that it takes a lot of points to make him that good.
