Reserves: I find them confusing. If this is explained clearly in the rulebook somewhere, I'm happy for someone to just point to the page number... but my question is this:

Do you have to declare what 'type' of reserve each unit is before the game starts? If it then goes in to 'ongoing reserves' does it have to come back in the same way it came in previously?

For example, if I have a Nigthscythe that contains my warlord with the Master of Manoeuvre trait (warlord and unit have outflank). Do I have to decide before the game starts if the unit will deep strike, outflank, or just come in from my table edge? Then, after the game starts, the Nightscythe flies off a table edge, going in to ongoing reserves. Does it then have to come back in the same way as before?

You have to decide when you put the unit into reserves if it is outflanking or deepstriking.
If it goes into ongoing reserves you simply follow the ongoing reserve rules in the rulebook p125.

The requirement to tell your opponent can be found in several places. On page 124 it states you must explain the organization of your reserves to your opponent and this can be argued to also include the method they are arriving from. Within the special rules that do change the standard method to arriving from reserves this is also repeated. On page 36 it brings up the fact you need to inform your opponent of any unit arriving by deep strike within the first paragraph. Outflanking, found on page 40, also states that you need to inform your opponent which units are outflanking during the deployment stage, which is when you are putting them into reserves.

On going reserves can be found on page 125 and states that ongoing reserves enter play through the normal reserve method. The normal rules for reserve do allow you to return to the battle field through alternative means then just your table edge. This is very important for mishapping deep striking units, as they are placed on ongoing reserves but are still arriving from deep strike the following turn. Outflanking is not possible however, as this special rule states that it can not be used from ongoing reserves. Any unit with outflanking that is put into ongoing reserves will come in from your table edge.

PS -

Something to keep in mind about the NightScythe: They have lost the deep strike special rule thanks to FAQ's. In fact, most skimmers that have been upgraded to flyers have had the deep strike rule stripped from them. This would prevent any flier from being put into ongoing reserves, through leaving the field of play, and then deep striking back in on the next turn as they can not deep strike to begin with. It is very unlikely there is any unit that can leave the table and then deep strike back in, as only a handful of units have permission to enter ongoing reserves and I can not find one that still has the deep strike rule. Truthfully, didn't look hard, but it seems to be the way Game Workshop is preventing deep striking units from repetitively deep striking onto the table.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
