So my friends and I like making our own terrain and buildings and I was considering making myself a bastion. As custom Aegis defense lines are quite commonplace and generally accepted even in competetive play, I was wondering if custom bastions would be as well.
In order for a custom built Bastion to be counted as a Basion must it match the store bought Bastion in size and shape, or can it simply follow the rulebook's (Vague) rules regarding them?

The rulebook only states that it is a medium building with access/fire points "as per model" and that the four heavy bolters are TYPICALLY one on each facing.
The Games Workshop website description - "Bastions can take the form of anything from reinforced ferrocrete bunkers to pyramidal tombs made of living metal."

Would you guys permit your opponent to have a custom bastion in their army that did not match the GW model? (for instance, 2, 3, or all 4 heavy bolters on one facing, different shape, no battlements, etc)
In a casual setting?
In a competitive setting?
In a tournament?

Or would you rather it be used only as a derelict building similar to a bastion. or not at all.

First the rules for Bastions, FoRs and Skyshields are all sorts of messed up. ADL as well but to a lesser extent.

In a tournament it would be up to the TO.
In a competitive, non-tournament setting it should be similar to the stock model.
In a casual setting, I would be fine with it. There are plenty of ways to get around it and take it out with no threat.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I would *prefer* to play against a person that has made a bastion to suit his army.

I'm thinking of making a bastion for sisters out of a Pegasus Hobbies Gothic City Building myself.

As long as you don't try to make it so that you get obvious advantages in the game, I see it as really cool. There's a guy on the Painting forums right now making one for his 'nids. It's looking really cool so far.

I would very much be in favor of your bastion being something customized for your own army.

I would prefer, however, that your bastion was of similar dimensions to the stock model. I'm putting together my second fortification now, and when I get done, I'll post the dimensions of it for those interested in fabricating custom ones. (That shouldn't violate forum rules, should it?)

I am with Purifier here,

One of the biggest problem with 'stock standard' fortifications is they do not fit narrative very well. They are all 'imperial' after all, making it really unusual for any non-human army to have them. Some can easily get away with simply commandeering them, defacing the outside to make it look more 'orkish' or whomever, but even then it doesn't always seem to match the rest of the army very well.

Just try and keep them in line with the rules and I see no problem from a friendly point of view as tournaments are always up to the organizers of course.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Fortunately our good friend over at underthecouch.net has created a very handy guide to identifying bastions located here.

Apologies to Insaniak for posting this link without permission.

Awesome, so it seems like most people would be fine with it but I should probably keep it the same as the imperial bastion in all regards except appearance. Thanks for the feedback, and If anyone has any pictures of custom ones they or people they know have made I'd love some inspiration!

I'm working on an Eldar Aegis defence line based on something I saw online (a Tau def line made out of spoons, of all things) I'm referring to it as 'The Fortress of Spoons'. I emailed GW to find out if this woud be akay at an official (Throne of Skulls, in this case) event and was told that as long as the only actual model bits I used were made by GW, it was all good, spoons and all, as long as it was clear to my opponent what it was supposed to be.

Never was it mentioned that it should be the same length as the official one, which is made up of '4 short and 4 long' wall pieces. Good job I play fair and will match the dimensions to the original, or I could turn up with 30 feet of defense line...

I'm all for people making their own fortifications, an would be okay with this if the building was roughly the same size* as GW one*. One thing I'm a bit iffy about though, is putting all of the guns on the same side. That kinda smells like modelling for advantage to me, as most of the time it would be just a better setup.

* I mean very roughly, you should use the rules for fortification your custom model most closely corresponds to. A large Ork fort would be better represented by the rules for Fortress of Redemption than Imperial Bastion for example.

You could... but whether or not you would be allowed to use them would depend on the TO on the day.

The lack of a ruling beforehand does not preclude a ruling being made on the day.

True. But seeing as I currently only attend official GW Events, I think it might be best if I make it 28", like the official one.

Also 30 feet is a lot of spoons...
