This week I'm playing a 2v1 match. I'm to bring 1k Space Wolves to partner up with my buddy and his 1k Guard. Our opponent will be bringing 2k Eldar or Tyranids, I don't know which.

So far, the list I have is this:

Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf (Runic armor, Thunder Hammer, Storm Shield meltabombs, wolf tail, wolf tooth necklace, Saga of the Bear)

10 x Grey Hunters ( Mark of the Wulfen, Standard, Power Fist, Melta, Flamer, Rhino)
10 x Grey Hunters (Mark of the Wulfen, Standard, Power Fist, Melta, Flamer, Rhino)

3 x Thunderwolf Cavalry (2 x CCW, 1 Power Lance, 3 x Storm Shields)

What do you all think? I'm open to C&C and alternative lists. The other units I own are 20 more Grey Hunters, 1 Rune/Wolf Priest, 10 Sky or Blood Claws/Grey Hunters, 1 Redeemer (though pairing up with Guard I think this would be a huge point sink at this point level), 2 Land Speeders.

My group is VERY relaxed about WYSIWYG, and open to proxies, so different loadouts beyond what I have modeled is fine. I tried to fit the Redeemer in for fear of Tyranids but I just can't justify it. I think this makes sense, but I could easily see swapping out the HQ. Wolf Priest might be fun as I've never played one. A Rune Priest with Murderous Hurricane would slow down either potential opponent. Look forward to your advice!

Against either army the power fists are near worthless. Anything you need that fist against can be dealt with by a combination of krak grenades and MOTW. Dropping those can buy you a speeder.

Melta weapons are a bit overkill against either army as well. Eldar skimmers are only 12/12/10 and can easily negate a single melta shot through jink, speed and serpent shields. Plasma would probably be a better buy, or two flamers for more crowd control. Melta is not the worst though...

Melta bombs on the wolf lord are overkill, the thunder hammer will do more damage every time. You only need the bombs to take out a LR or monolith. Same with the lance on the TWC, probably better to just use the rending of the wolf. Those extra points get you another gun on the speeder. A typhoon would be ideal, but 2 heavy bolters for dakka or 2 meltas for suicide works too.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Thanks! With 10 GH in a unit, I can take a free flames then my melted or plasmas are free so tht would be a tactical change, but the PF would give me back quite a bit.

This ^. Exactly. Most definitely ditch the power fists and take two of the same special weapon. If it were me I'd say two flamers or two plasmaguns. Let him assault you and get your overwatch + counter attack.

Also...Your wolf lord is all kinds of messed up.
1) Meltabombs are not needed. Six S10 concussive attacks from your thunder hammer are better than one meltabomb attack any day of the week.
2) Which by the way, when you take the thunder hammer, you're throwing away that initiative 5. It would be better to give the wolf lord a wolf claw and have him shred infantry at Init5 and AP3. You don't need AP2 against Eldar, IG, or Tyranids anyway.
3)You do NOT need a wolf tooth necklace when you have WS 6 ! You already hit every thing on a 3+ anyway. And anything your opponent has that has a WS or better, you should avoid with your lord.
4) Wolf tail is meh. I suppose if you have 5 points to spare.

TWC : 3 storm shields is a waste of points. You only need one. Also....a power lance? Seriously? You should take a power fist or thunder hammer and take advantage of 4 x S10 attacks (5 on the charge)!

So you can save 50 points by ditching power fists, 25 points on your wolf lord by dropping the meltabombs, WTT and WTN and exchanging TH for wolf claw. Then you can save 50 points by dropping two storm shields on your TWC and upgrading the lance to a fist.

125 points is enough for a squad of long fangs with points to spare. This squad...
Spoiler:
6 Long Fangs + 5 Heavy Bolters (115 points)

is perfect for wrecking Eldar, IG and Nids.

2500 pts

You bring up a point I didn't realize about the Wolf Lord and TWC. I thought when using a special weapon, the extra attack gained by the mount remained rending but the others didn't. I didn't realize all attacks used those stats. Is this in a book or FAQ?

Ha, found it. I'll be removing the fists, melta bombs and necklace. The last two were to just eat up points anyway. I'll think about dropping the SS on the TWC. I figure the extra save would be nice vs Eldar. I think LC would be interesting. I may try those out. Help him mow stuff down, they won't have problems with Eldar or Nids.

Ok, so my Guard buddy and I will be going against Eldar, so this is what I came up with:

Wolf Lord on TW (Runic Armor, 2 x Wolf Claws, Saga of the Bear, Wolf Tail Talisman)

10 x Grey Hunters (MotW, Standard, flamer, plasmagun)

10 x Grey Hunters (MotW, Standard, Flamer, Plasmagun)

3 x TWC (SS + CCW, BP + CCW, BP + PW)

Land Speeder Typhoon

I like how this list is, but the only thing I'm not set on is the loadout for the GH. I've used the flamer+plasma combo before and it was ok, but since I'll be having the Guard to back up with long range punch, maybe flamer+melta would be better. That would only save me 10 points total, so that isn't really a factor.

I assume your guard buddy will be taking most of the antitank? If so just take 2 flamers for lots of close-range hits on space elves, and if you feel like fitting him in add the Wolf Priest, confer preferred enemy: infantry on the GH pack and watch the bodies pile up
