Hi.

The last time i painted a model was way back when the first vampire counts army book was released. Back then models (in white dwarf at least) tended to be painted pristinely, lined with black and shaded with darker versions of the chosen colour. Im not seeing much of that on models posted here, they seem to be well painted but in a more realistic style and ts been quite interesting to see some of the newer techniques. Im really liking the look of the airbrushed stuff and the weathering shown on some of the models is fantastic. Can anyone point me in the direction of modern painting and advanced techniques guide and also could you let me know if the vallejo paint range is any good.

vallejo are great paints, airbrushing is a good technique as are ink washes and weathering compounds but probably best to remaster the basics first. Youtube has many many painting videos. Just search on it.

Vallejo is great imo. They come in dripper bottles and are already pretty thin which is great for fast painting.
I have no experience of painting in the "ancient times" but by the look of it they used less washes then people do today. I always recommend Nuln Oil, Agrax earthshade and Seraphim Sepia from GW as a nice start-up on washes. They give you the basic colors needed to just pour some "skill out of the bottle" over your model.

Just my 2 cents, here you´ll find people who know way more about painting then me

Vallejo paints are generally good. Better in general than GW paints IMO, but like anything some ranges do some things right and it's never black and white so to speak.

As for general guides, there's really been a proliferation of technique over the last 10 years or so, so there's no single source as it were.

Buzzwords to google though:
'Zenithal highlight' 'Nadir Shading'
Washes
Glazing / Juicing
Edge highlighting

Thanks for the quick replies.

Winterdyne. I looked up both zenithal and nadir techniques but all i seemed to come up with was photograhy references to point of light. Am i right in thinking that these techniques are about how light falls on things naturally?

About the time i gave up painting (mid ninties) washes, glazes and line edging were things i used to do, sometimes with some success.

Partly correct. It's about establishing where the light source is, then painting the mini as the light would fall on it from your established source. Zenithal means the light is directly overhead, like at noon. As was already stated, work on the fundamentals, then spread out into things like zenithal, osl, weathering, etc.
