My brother and I are new to 40k and we had just finally finished reading and fully understood the 6th edition rules when GW came out with 7th edition. Since we don't have a group of gamers to play with and don't have a copy of the newest rules yet, we're kinda stuck. It would be really helpfull if someone could describe the differences in the rules, we would really appreciate the help.

See I didn't know that, I guess I mean the latest edition of the rules.

No, we cant really describe them. Read through - the changes are mostly obvious (random charge ranges) and more subtle (one model with Move Through Cover lets the whole unit benefit, one model with Fearless is enough)

on the forum. Obviously

1) Addition of Flyer rules

2) Addition of hull points

3) Changes to how vehicles work

4) Overwatch

5) Melee weapons now have AP

6) MCs have different rules

7) ICs can challenge

8) Rules for characters (i.e squad sergeants)

9) Sniper rifles actually work like sniper rifles

10) Wound Allocation is different.

11) Random charge distance

12) Cover is different

13) Jump units are slightly nastier on the charge

14) You can no longer charge a squad with an MC or walker if the squad can't hurt it (well, you can, but the charged squad is allowed to fall back)

Those are some of the big ones

I wrote a document once with the changes from 5th to 6th (helped me learn them and my hobby group)...it was 4 A4 pages so no we can't really summarize them that easily!

So to basically sum up what you guys have been saying is that I just need to buy the new rules and read it because it's basically a new game.Great......

It's different enough that you can't play it without having the rules yes.

6th edition has been out for a year now, are you sure you don't have that already? Why were you learning the old rules?

It's the copy we had acsess to and we thought that they couldn't have changed that much to the rules so we played with the now old rules.

Nothing stops you using the 5th ed rules, you just can't use any 6th ed codex with it.

Best bet is grab a mini-rulebook of eBay to keep the costs down.

Okay, like from the Dark Vengence box. Does this mean that if the army your playing hasn't had the codex updated that you can't play 6th edition.

The FAQs, and the reference at the back of the 6th edition rulebook, gets your pre-6th codex up to workign in 6th.

Okay, like an updated cheat sheet. Does it also do it in the tiny DV rule book.

Yes, the DV rulebook is identical to the big hardback book, just without the background/history/painting section.

Yep, FAQS are on the GW website (google for warhammer faqs and it's the first option I think)

I actually have two copies of 5th edition rules, one for me and one for my brother.

It more sounds fishy when you ask for us to describe the differences, as that sounds like you just want an update to 6th without paying. YMDC is for asking questions about rules, which posters stayed within the realms of, ya have to actually read them before those questions typically though.
