Subject: Wolf Guard as Specialist Weapon Drops?

Here's a strategy I'm considering... Is it cost effective to take a squad of, say, 8 Wolf Guard, pop them in a Drop Pod, and give them all Combi Weapons? (Plasma or Flamer probably.) Use the last two guys as free slots to get more CMLs.

A combi squad in drop pod was one of the first popular units in the new Space Wolf dex, but then wolf guard became mainly used as squad leaders.
It's still an effective unit I reckon, but a bit of a one hit wonder, I'd take a couple of special weapons just to give you a bit of CC punch.

A buddy of mine employees this tactic on a regular basis. He puts some WG bodies in a pod with some combi melta and a rune priest. He puts 7 WG in a pod with a wolf priest(nick name Preferred Enemy: First Blood lol). and has three pods with various setups of Grey Hunters. Usually the wolf priest and combi plasma come in and erase something of import if the rune priest and combi meltas can't Jaws or melta something for first blood. Then he just procedes to be annoying and drop in the troops either to back up the first wave or land on an objective.

I used to take a full unit of 10 with various combi weapons, a few power weapons and a power fist. Then drop it behind enemy lines and pop tanks and melee infantry.

Yeah, it's worth it. They sort of act like a combined Sternguard/Vanguard in that respect - give them combi-weapons and use the firepower on the drop, then give them a power weapon and/or fist to smack people about a bit (and of course you have Counter-Attack to help there too if you do get charged).

They work, but only in force. They are NOT worth the points if you drop them in front an enemy gunline alone. They are TOTALLY worth the points, in pairs and immediately supported by GH. It's all about target saturation and maintaining force coherency. If you drop pod assault one unit of WG turn one while the rest of your army is on the other side of the table, sure they will vape one unit, but will be wiped immediately. Present your opponent with too many angry, power-suited wolf men to kill in one shooting phase, and you will have angry, power-suited wolf men, to beat face with when your turn comes around. He's expensive as hell, but Logan Grimnar, makes these guys scoring which is awesome, as well as doling out some significant buffs (like +1 attack for one assault phase in 18"). I like taking 7 or 8 all with combis and one in TA with a heavy flamer (38 pts for a model with a S5 AP5 template and a power wep ain't bad). Attach a rune priest or wolf priest and make things cry. They are great, but only with proper synergy.
