Been Around the Block
|
I have been playing a series of games over the last few weeks against an Eldar player. I play Necrons (though I admit to being relatively new to them.
I basically can't help but feel outclassed between his psykers giving wraithguard 2+ saves, scatterlaser spamming wave serpents, dark reapers and of course his obnoxious wraithknight.
In the few games we've played he has gone first every game and taken out the only decent ranged units I had with his insane volume of high strength fire. Am I simply doomed to suffer the old(ish) codex blues, or is there something I could be doing?
I usually run a 20 man squad of warriors backed up with 10 in an ark, 3 nightscythes, some spyder/scarabs and the rest of the army variable.
Please help!!!

Now imagine playing them with BA.
Seriously, though, I'm interested to see what other Necron players think about this matchup. From my matches against Necrons, I feel that they have the tools, unlike meq lists. However, I'm not privvy to the specifics really.

you can't fly around in the air while the Eldar can shoot d6 tl s7 shots at you. or they just have a quad and Scatter walkers and take down 2 a turn.

Oh no, poor necrons, having to deal with a FOTM list they can't counter.
More importantly, I'd actually suggest throwing the croissants in the bin and taking a lot of gauss warriors against newdar. Not sure how well it will work, but from what I know of your dex it would be the easiest option to waste his high-str shots on stuff that can RP anyway when killed.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can. |

It might be luck, or just a change in our meta but I have moved back into playing with heavy destoryers since the new eldar, and tau for that matter, got their bumps.
I have been running a bottom teir Olord
4 NS with 5man warrior squads in them
Stalker
3 groups of 3 heavy destoryers
tripple abs
ADL and quad gun.. I start one of the NS empty... and man the quad with a 5 man warrior unit.
this listed has been dubbed my crony bang bang, thats a whole lot of prefered enemy s9 ap2 shots that can be twin linked on a single unit. I have ever considered dropping a scythe and warrior group for another stalker just to increase the shots and TL goodness.
I also still have a lot of Av13 tesla goodness to share with my enemy. I've not played this list a lot and I know if I meet an ork horde I'll likely be toast but "so far" it has done well.

What would really hurt me personally is bunching up and marching up the midfield so that anything I have to get close to, I get in range of everything. Take maxed out warriors/immortals on foot. With some tesla some gauss. then 3 annihilation barges. then 2 wraith units 1 with destroyer lord, 1 with zandreck to take away hit and run or stealth or w/e from what ever unit you are targeting. Run wraiths up as a sacrafice and force the eldar to deal with them, meanwhile RUNNING everything up the board to get a turn 2/3 shooting phase on them.

In all seriousness, get rid of Eldar range first. Fire Prisms and Dark Reapers need to be the first to go. That much AP3 from 48 or 60 will hurt you. The hardest ranged thing to kill will be Serpents shooting deflector dish fields at you...
Most of their infantry has pretty short ranged weaponry some examples:
Spiders
Wraithguard
Wraithblades
Scorpions
Banshees
Guardians
(I know I listed some close combat guys)
Once they are inside your range and you're at least trading shots, you will outlast them. Eldar rely on run-shoot or shoot-run. A bad dice roll for that will either leave them out of range to shoot you while you can shhot them , OR will leave them in range to shoot you and then get charged

TBH ap3 isn't that bad when you just poor the shots on. 2 Fire Prisms can score maybe 8 wounds a turn if you're really not smart/unlucky. That hurts but with cover its not AS bad. Plus if all they have left is Prisms while you wiped everything else...yeah...

Ally with IG and spam vendettas. With 4 scythes and 9 vendettas you should have a pretty good chance.

I do not understand people who are typing something like this. Have you tried to play a list such as this? Maybe you should, to discover the great mystery - this list is incredibly bad. There are many reasons why, but you can surely figure it out yourself...after a bit of thinking.

Gauss is a great tool against most eldar armies. Be sure to focus on his 'psykers' to avoid as many re-rolls as possible. Forget the fire prisms until you have dealt with more prominent threats such as war walkers (these guys hit very hard but can be taken down fairly quickly if they are not popping in and out of cover).

Entirely agree with this. Now if by IG you meant CSM and by vendetta you mean helldrake...then yes this is probably the most popular and best placed netlist in the game. Completely unnecessary though as WS only average a single glance per WS per turn. This is not exactly Tau we are talking here. Just get your target priority correct. If a WS fires its shield then pound it into the ground. Kill the Wraithguard transport and then stay outside 18" of them. Kill the dark reapers soon and often. You just need to make them run or pin them (or GtG). Leave the wraithknight alone for the most part but if he gets near a mind shackle scarabs feel free to force him to punch himself to death. Additionally you can tarpit the wraithknight but it is not a good target to waste precious firepower on.
