Hey all. I have decided to create a Warhammer 40k social network based around the hobby, but, as I am only 15, I don't have the ability to create a social network from scratch. Would anyone be interested in helping? At the moment the work would be free, but if the site got up and running and money was made off of it, you would get paid. any inquiries please PM me. Thanks!

This sounds like a massive project for a programmer to undertake, especially without pay. Perhaps making a group on an established service would work? I can't help you, but perhaps someone else here on Dakka can. I'm also not sure if this is the right place for your request, but as I have limited experience on Dakka myself, I can't be the judge on that.

Perhaps we should just use Dakka? Somehow connect to locals in an organised way... setup a regional grouos forum area and each area gets a thread... eg I live in Poole uk and could imagine a Poole/Bournemouth area thread.

Probably best to start with an "out-of-the-box-software" such as Jomsocial, SocialEngine, etc.. .

But, as said, this would be a massive project (with highly uncertain success).

Young entreprenours are always cool and everything, but I'm afraid there is a grotesquely large over abundance of the ones that think having the idea is half the job, and you "just need someone to make it."

The way you are attacking this project will not work. Easy as that. your idea will not come to fruition this way.

However, having an idea like this is a fantastic opportunity to get into coding and start learning it in an environment where success matters.

Good luck!

Don't. It's the same size as everyone else's. If everyone were to put their own colour and size to their posts this social venue would become an absolute pain to read.

Thanks guys for the advice! I guessed it would be a large project, but I do have a few bits of help as it is. my dad has said he will help as he works on HTML and C++, so he would help, but I was looking for other people too.

Still. You cannot really outsource much, free or paid, unless you know (more than) the basics of the things you are using, so you actually know what you want to outsource to whom and for what purpose.

HTML and C++ is fine, but you'll obviously need some dynamic content management system, and I doubt you want to code that from scratch? So you'll probably have to start familiarizing yourself with some of the available staples... WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, etc.. possibly some PHP-script (though there's lots of dodgy stuff out there), get a dummy site going to play around with, etc.. .

And its not a bad idea at all, just a lot more work than you think to get the desired result.

I'm not sure I see the value in a 40k social network....

We already have facebook groups based on wargaming/geographic locations where you have pictures/personal info.

Then there are the major websites/forums: Dakka, Warseer, BoLS..... technically we could just change all our avatars here on dakka to our personal picture and fill out our dakka profile - boom you have all the discussion and photo galleries you want.

I understand it is fun to try and turn an idea into reality.... but what would this website do that isn't already being done?

Go setup a site with SocialEngine and see if you can actually get a community together.

Gone-to-ground in the craters of Coventry

Lots of areas use forums for this, which has pros and cons compared to other forms of social media.
We use Proboards for all clubs and shops in our county. It doesn't send out emails or anything, but we use it for arranging games, and keeping up with sales and offers in our FLGS.

If you're thinking of making Facehammer.com, read up on for Facebook began, and what they had to do to make it work.
Then, work out how big you really think your thing needs to be, and work towards that.
