No. When troops embark onto a transport, they are removed from the board. There are no rules allowing you to shoot at them, regardless of whether or not the vehicle is open-topped.

You can throw a grenade, the rules permit.

There isn't one. He's possibly getting confused with the Building rules, which do allow you to toss a grenade in at the occupants.

No, but I wish you could, now that you mention it. Having a close-range gunfight between units in open-topped transports would be awesome.

Anyways, just use that natural skepticism to your advantage. Whenever your dad wants to do something you thing is fishy, just ask him for a page number. Worst case, you get to learn the rules better.
