Just a very quick newb question - and as the title suggests its about allocating wounds both during the shooting phase and the assault phase.
As I understand it (and I've only played one game at this point) when unsaved wounds are allocated to a unit during the shooting phase they are given to the closest unit first - whilst unsaved wounds sustained to a unit during assault are allocated at the discression of the player controlling the wounded unit. Is this all correct?
During my first game my opponent allocated wounds sustained by his units during the shooting phase to whichever models he wanted - chiefly the guys at the back. I didnt think he should be doing that but couldn't find anything to confirm my version of what should happen.
Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated

Not quite correct.
Shooting is closest model (as you said, sort of).
Assault is still closest model, however the owning player (the one taking the wounds) gets to choose in order of closeness. So if a squad of 10 has 5 guys in base contact, all 5 guys are equally close and the owning player gets to choose which one is the closest for that Init step (or maybe phase, forget which).

In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Sort of. When unsaved wounds are allocated to a unit during the shooting phase they are given to the closest Model first.
When unsaved wounds are allocated to a unit during the Assault phase they are given to the closest Model first. This is the model that is in base contact with the attacking model at the given initiative. If there are many models in base contact with enemy models that are attacking at the same initiative the wounds can be allocated to any of the models in base contact with the attackers.

Read Page 15, it details how you need to take the closest guy first.

Thanks for those answers guys - makes the assault easier to understand and now youve said it I have found the rule in the book about the shooting phase too so cheers
One last clarification - if my unit includes my lord and all members are in base contact with an assaulting unit can I allocate wounds to anyone (lord or troops) in that unit or can my opponent specify that hes attacking my lord?

This is a change from 5th edition. In 5th, an attached IC fought separately. In 6th he is part of the unit.

Have a look as well at Precision Strikes and Precision shots.
It changes how IC's shots and strikes are allocated under certain circumstances.

Somewhat related, (enough to not make a new thread) but how is instant death handled now? I've been a bit confused about it and haven't found any solid answers. Here's a few scenarios:
1) Shooting - a unit shoots at a multi-wound multi-model unit. The nearest model is already injured. One shot is instant death, one is normal. Would it take the normal wound and then the instant death, or must it take the instant death first?
2) Melee - Pretty much the same as above. A squad of multi-wound models takes an instant death and a normal wound, with a target already wounded. Must the instant death be allocated to a full health target, or can it be given to the already injured target? If that normal wound would kill an injured target, can it be given to someone else so he lives?

for shooting, the model closest must take saves against wounds caused regardless of ID, if there is no save allowed from say an AP2 weapon then the model is just dead, with the sol exception being that if the closest model is an IC/C then a LOS can be made to transfer the wound to another model.
For Melee, the player can choose based on Ini Step and Base to base, who takes what. So yes he could place the ID wound on a a model that has already lost a wound, and then place the other wound on a model that has not.

Thanks for some clarification, but for the shooting part I could still use some guidance - so if the target has two wounds, and takes two, but one of them is instant death. Would he first take the regular wound, then the instant death? Or would he take the instant death, then the spare wound be passed on to the next target?

The player doing the shooting gets to choose the order in which each wound pool (group of identical wounds) is resolved.
Each wound pool must be fully resolved before moving onto the next one.
So in that situation you could make him take the normal wound first, and then move onto the instant death wound.
Same deal in close combat.
But as stated earlier in the thread, if there are multiple models in base contact then the player who owns them gets to choose where to allocate the wounds.
You just pick the order in which they take them.

The firing player assigns wounds pools to the defending player to take, the defending player then saves the wounds (if he can) against the closest model.
The firing player chooses which wounds the defending player takes first.

The answer was given above, but I think it does need one more clarification; once you have chosen which model is closest, that model is closest until he dies. If you take 5 wounds and have 5 models with two wounds in close combat, they cannot take one wound each. Two will die and one will take a wound.

And for a further clarification - the model that is closest in assault is the closest AT the I step you are fighting on
So if you take 1 I10 wound on a 2W model, with 5 in base contact, at I9 you could designate the unwounded model(s) as the closest for that step (For ease I am assuming all models in base contact by the time I10 comes around)
