Hi Dakka,

I got into the hobby at the time of the Third edition Tyranid codex release, and not even painted a single unit since that time! That is all about to change. Any advice/critique is very much appreciated!

Here is the chitin experiment i have been tinkering with for the last few day.

Repeated trips to the GW in town to get different paints to try out and I think i have settled on the carapace on the right, with the streaking method, the inspiration and scheme was from Menelkers fleet, (linkyhttp://www.figurepainters.com/tips-tutorials/2011/8/15/painting-a-tyranid-flying-hive-tyrant-golden-demon-winner.html ) absolutely stunning models...

With the chitin on the left, I was initially trying for the original Moloch scheme but my painting skill did not do it justice, and felt that the overall scheme would be very dark.

The middle chitin was a bone tester but I prefer the streaky one, its kinda faster as ink takes AGES to dry.

Next job is to work on the flesh, any advice for dark red flesh?

Thanks for letting me know, hope that is it fixed now.

I tried a Khorne Red Base, with Druchii Violet Wash then Mephiston Red layer for the flesh, any thoughts? The pictures aren't the best quality, shaky iphone pics, I don't have a proper camera.

Thanks

Try filling in the non fleshy parts this will help make the skin pop, however I do really like shade of red you have achieved, kind of reminds me of the red skull. Also the chitin in this picture is my favourite, is it just drybrushing?

Hi Eldercaveman, thanks. Its a series of drybrushes, I added some extra details.

I'm really looking forward to getting much more done on the army, first thing is complete a unit of Gaunts.

Now you've got one menacing looking Gant! I like it.

Yeh that gant looks badass!
The red is a truely nice colour for such a creature Would look awesome on larger scaled models too.

A tip - (considering I just painted 2 squads of 30 boys..) Dont work solely on gants unless your some crazy painting machine they will take your soul! Mix it up with some modelling or larger models. By the end of my boys I could have cried

Favourite Game: When your Warboss on bike wrecks 3 vehicles simply by HoW - especially when his bike is a custom monowheel.

I agree with Solar Shock. Painting too much of anything can break your mind. I try to do 4-5 regular figures, followed by one different one. Either that, or do all the models one colour at a time, followed by a break between each colour.
Colours you chose look good! The armor plating looks crisp, and the red is nice and even.

Thank you guys, for the awesome compliments! Really chuffed with how it turned out!

Good point, Solar Shock and Aeroroot, I am by no means a painting machine, this is my first fully painted model in about 5 years! I am going to get through painting another 11 Termagaunts, and then either 12 Hormagaunts or convert a Prime from the old Tyrant Guard model with the spine shield. I have roughly 5,000 points worth of Tyranid models alone to get through, so planning on splitting it down into lots of blocks.

Till next time, I may be gone some time...

Streaky is my fave of those, V nice, won't find any of mine like that, too many chitins not enough patience =D.
Don't forget to post your other models when you get round to them

It's my codex and I'll cry If I want to.

Tactical objectives are fantastic
