Hi all,

I've recently picked up, amongst other things, a few more Striking Scorpions in a Dakka Swap Shop trade (shout out to the Swap Shop ). Considering the Scorpions are pretty cool and were much improved in the new codex, I figured I'd try to make an army list around them. As is usually the case, this list isn't meant to be super-competitive and WAAC, but I would still like it to win me plenty of games.

So, on with the list.

HQ

Karandras (230)

Farseer (115)
The Spirit Stone of Althanlana'ltnal'than (or something like that)

Warlock (35)
Chills with the Guardians

Troops

Dire Avengers x10 (285)
Exarch. In WS w/ TL Scatters, Shuricannon and HF

Dire Avengers x10 (160) [Farseer goes here]
Exarch w/ PW + Shimmershield

Guardians x10 (110)
Bright Lance

Jetbikes x3 (61)
Shuiricannon

Jetbikes x3 (51)

Elites

Striking Scorpions x7 (159) [Karandras goes here]
Exarch w/ Claw

Striking Scorpions x9 (193)
Exarch w/ Claw

Fast Attack

Crimson Hunter (180)
Exarch Pilot

Heavy Support

Dark Reapers x3 (130)
Exarch w/ Tempest Launcher + Fast Shot

Fire Prism (140)
HF

TOTAL: 1849

---------------------------------------------------------

So, there you have it. The general plan of the list is to engage the enemy with two waves. The Scorpions and the mounted DAs push forward and deal damage. These guys will probably not last the battle, but will hopefully do a lot of damage in return. The foot DAs push up, so the farseer can offer support to all the army. The guardians sit on the home objective, whilst the JBs are held in reserve and hopefully come on as late as possible for some late-game objective grabs. The Crimson Hunter is there to deal with flyers, the Dark Reapers with MEQs and the Fire Prism with Armour and MEQs. I did consider dropping the reapers for another Fire Prism, or maybe trying to fit some Fire Dragons or an Aegis in the list somewhere. Let me know what you think!

Thanks in advance

The list looks useable except the points cost for your crimson hunter is not right, it should be 180 with that load out.

Also i don't see what dire avengers give you that guardians don't for cheaper.

Ah yes, thanks for pointing that out, I've patched that up.

As for DA vs Guardians. The DA in the WS have an extra 6" of range which is really crucial for the role they have and it really does make all the difference. The footslogging DAs merely have the advantage of better saves 4+/5++ which is very useful since they're not going to be hogging cover at the back lines and may have Fortune support from the Farseer. The extra 6" Range and Counter Attack (as well as extra combat prowess from the Exarch) is also very useful.

I would try just guardians...no Heavy weapons platform...that saves you 40+ points each...for walking foot troops, definitely DAs over Guardians. But you aren't using the Da's first turn anyway...first turn move up 12 with waveserpents, so you are at the half field mark. Then next turn you move 6" unload from back 6" (keeping serpent facing forward), so you are at about the front of the serpent, then either battle focus and shoot, or shoot 12 then battle focus...either way that kills 5ish marines a turn, without the shooting from the serpent. the things that will then charge you back and kill you, you shouldn't be using whats in the serpents on anyway. thats my thought on it. Another thought...what do you do for av 14? i know prism has 1 lance, but what if you wiff with that 1 lance? what are your other options? Yes kandras can potentially do damage but like its iffy.

I always take garudians over DAs in serpents. like qballony said, wit hbattle focus and transport will get in range, the 6'' extra really wont matter enough for 40+ points more, counter attack not that usefull, they willl get shredded by anything with any decent cc anyways.

keep the DAs for footslogging, but drop them in tanks.

just my 2pence

That's not the way I use mounted DAs. The Wave Serpent isn't there for a quick ride to the front-line, at least, not entirely. The main reason I have it is for mobility. With help from Battle Focus I can move round the battlefield, unloading shots, whilst the enemy (infantry at least) won't be able to catch me, mainly due to that extra 6". I'll give Guardians a shot (no pun intended), but I'm fairly certain I'll want to stick with DAs.

@qballony: My lack of anti-AV14 is indeed a problem, and one that I've noted, which is why I did consider dropping the Dark Reapers for another Fire Prism, however, I'd like to keep the Dark Reapers in for some anti-MEQ fire. As far as dropping other things go, the Jetbikes are probably the easiest thing to drop, but I'm not keen on doing so.

*shrug* or try 1 prism and for the other 140 points take 2 war walkers with BLs thats an addtional 3 shots of lance a turn. you will still have decent Anti Infantry too.

Executing Exarch

The Twilight Zone

The spirit stones of whatshisname are a bit much, other than fortune there is no real need for them.

The exarch for the mounted DA squad is worthless, drop him and spend the points elsewhere, either boosting the reapers or a shuircannon on the other bike squad.

Like the scorpions, take monster hunter on the exarch without karandras if you have the points.

A tempest launcher is a waste of points on the reaper exarch. They should be using the S8 missiles instead, just keep their launchers and give them all starshot. Night vision is also fantastic for the reapers if you have the points.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

I'm really not convinced on the starshot missiles for the Reapers. I plan on using them for taking out MEQs, not light vehicles, so 2 shots killing on 3s is better. As for the Tempest Launcher, it's a Heavy 3 Blast (with Fast Shot) which is just awesome. I've also had a lot of use out of the Spirit Stone.

I'll bear in mind some of your other points though and I may come up with a revised list later on.
