One Canoptek Scarab in a Swarm

Hey all, i m angling to start up a W/H army soon, and i really like the troll bloods look, and from the very few games ive seen at the lgs their play style. i was hoping to get some advice on a good place to start for a TB's force. Not really asking for someone to build me a list or anything, I'm more hoping to get some info about a good place to start for competitive play... i.e is the battle box worth it? is beast heavy the way to go etc. any advice will be appreciated !

posting this from a diffrent form
Casters:
pMadrak, pDoomshaper, pGrim
Heavy Beasts:
Earthborne, Mauler, Bomber (I guess)
Light Beasts:
Axer, Impaler, Pyre (good for collection, not really for starters)
Units (I don't suggest units for new players, but these will be staples later):
Krielstone Bearer and Scribes, Champions, Fennblades+UA
Solos (Again I don't suggest solos):
Fell Caller, Stone Scribe Elder, Whelps
The EBDT is such a great beast that is easy to figure out on its own that every troll player should pick it up. The Mauler is solid, I don't use it often in favor of Mulg, but that doesn't mean it isn't a quality beast.

Going beast heavy or not depends on the caster usually. That said, trolls love their units and solos a lot, and tend to play more infantry from what I've seen. For example, epic doomshaper loves his warbeasts, while pGrissel absolutely loves units. Do you know what casters you are looking at?
On to commentary
All the warbeasts that have been mentioned above are pretty good. That said, Mulg has been mentioned briefly, and I'd like to mention a bit more about him, and would highly suggest him (dire troll with a tree, beats most things to death, protective fit is sweet too [when they damage your caster, mulg gets to move towards it and punch it]), that said, he's 12 points. One thing I have to disagree with is the statement about the pyre troll. Its animus is +2 to melee damage rolls and immunity fire...not quite as nice as rage as a damage buff, but the pyre troll is way cheaper than the mauler.
Unit wise, I agree that Fennblades+UA and Krielstone+UA are great staple units...unfortunately I don't have much experience with champs so I can't comment on them.
Solo wise, someone I feel has been left out is Janissa (she's amazing...drop a wall wherever, in addition to other things she can do)
When starting out, I would suggest a battlebox, though maybe not for trolls...3 lights is kind of meh, and haven't seen anyone use the pDoomie battlebox

I'd just recommend Mulg over the Mauler at this point. I can't even tell you the last time I saw a Mauler on the table. It's shame too, Mulg is so ugly, but I love the look of the metal Mauler, it's so characterful, the conversion to plastic just didn't sustain that.
