Ah, Yume Nikki. How best to describe this game? Ah yes, that was it. Fething terrifying.

For those not familiar with this amazing, if disturbing game, Yume Nikki is a Japanese indie game (or "Doujin Soft") created by Kikiyama. You are placed in control of a young girl named Madotsuki. She lives in a squalid apartment, with nothing but a TV with no channels, a Famicom, a cupboard, a writing desk and a bed. She can go out onto the balcony, but there is nothing to do there. She refuses to leave through the door. All you can do is play her only game on her Famicom, NASU, a depressingly futile game where you collect aubergines (eggplants to you yanks) falling from the sky.

Until you go to bed.

When you fall asleep, the actual game begins. You guide Madotsuki through her twisted, surreal, and at times downright horrifying dreams, in search of all 24 "Effects", ranging from the cosmetic (such as the Neon effect) to the useful (such as the Bicycle). You will encounter many NPCs on your journeys, most of which are harmless and insignificant, whilst others will help or hinder your progress, ranging from critters that give you effects, to the omnipresent Toriningen, who will either go about their merry way or trap you in an inescapable area which you can only leave by waking yourself up (or using the Medamaude Effect). However, by far the most dangerous being in the entire game is Madotsuki herself. Whilst the worst the NPCs can do is wake you up or trap you temporarily, once she has the Knife, Madotsuki can murder just about any unfortunate bystander who gets in her way (with the exception of Toriningen, who will chase after her if she tries to stab them).

The game world is huge, with an enormous amount of areas to explore. However, whilst some worlds, like the Neon World and the Snow World, are fairly serene and friendly, others, such as the grotesque Eyeball World and the unsettling Numbers World (also home to the outright disturbing FACE event) are extremely creepy.

An English version of the game is available to download here (Don't worry, the game is completely free anyway, and the creator actually encourages fan mods and translations). Enjoy.

Anyone else familiar with this nightmarish game?

I tend to ignore RPG maker games, but it sounds like an interesting premise.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I'm not familiar with other RPG maker games, so I can't really comment much on that, but trust me, it is well worth it. It's very unique, and very much its own thing-and certainly nothing like an RPG. The only things it carries over from the RPG maker background is the movement (arrow keys) and an HP bar, which serves no purpose whatsoever. There's no"battles" or random encounters, or shops, it is completely dedicated to exploring and trying out different effects. There's not even any dialogue.

I would say give it a go-it's not very system intensive, and is tiny and easy to remove if you don't like it. Just don't ply it before bed.
