Hey everyone,

So I am just starting to paint my tau and was thinking of snow bases for them. I prime all my minis black so I was thinking of just brushing white onto the bases then adding some of citadels snow flock.

I don't really want just straight snow bases so was wondering if I could somehow integrate some rocks or something into the bases? Is there small shale rocks available anywhere?
I also have some old citadel cobble looking stuff its really small brown mixed pebbles for bases and maybe I could add that?
Any ideas?

It would be awesome to see some of your examples of snow bases for more inspiration thanks!

I think you could DIY it with some stuff from outside your house.

But I have used the winter secret weapon kit with some sucess, if you play with it some you can get pretty good results.

My army is in my signature, the first page has some snow bases for fortifications (and a few infantry, but not with clear pictures) and the second page has a snow base for one of my flyers. It's all resin scenic bases (mix of dragon forge rocky bases and secret weapon runic mountain/trench works), with the snow being a mix of Woodland Scenics soft flake snow and realistic water to make a nice icy slush. If you want something a little more white Christmas-y you'll probably want to use a different method.

Just note that the snow and water are just re-packaged Woodland Scenics stuff. They make great bases and the kit is a useful starting point to test with, but if you're doing lots of snow it's way too expensive to buy the little secret weapon packages.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Here's one of my snowy bases:

Its Sand (primed black, painted brown, dry brushed lighter brown), bit of white paint in places where snow will be thickest, snow flock spread to overlap white and brown for different snow depths, and some rocks from garden painted up like grey stone.
