I thought we can only guess because it's so massive that we can't go out far enough to take a look... something like that was a "nobody knows" on Qi a while back...

JB: I like the concept of a free Shrike roaming through the treetops of the jungle. I'm not sure that I like the idea of a real Shrike sitting on my couch eating my Skittles.

We can infer the distances of star using Various Methods and build a 3D model from that data. The quality of our model is constantly improving but the gross structure of our galaxy is beyond resonable doubt

The eye of terror won't form until around 29,750AD, so it isn't a navigational hazard yet, watch out for the homeworlds of the kinky eldar though
