Me and a friend are getting into Cold War gone Hot wargaming. I am having trouble finding a set I like, usually in this situation I would write my own, but then someone recommended Ospreys Force on Force.
I'm really after a skirmish game around platoon level, though I am open to a battalion sized game. I want to know how Force on Force work and what level of operations it entails. Unit stats are irrelevant as I can add my own if the rules don't come with any.
Is it a good system to play, or are there better rules out there for Cold War gone Hot?
please help me fellow dakkarites!

Force on Force is a really fun system.
Actual weapon systems don't matter too much, instead they focus mor eon Troop Quality. In addition, it uses a really great action/reaction system.
I like it alot.

The focus on troop quality sounds nice, There seems to be a tendency towards technology these days, when It has been proven time and time again that training is the key.
So is it a Skirmish game or is it a 'big battalions' game?

The last time I played it, I had around 25 soldiers, a couple APCs and one tank and with being relatively new to the system, the game took a couple hours. Maybe 2 and a half with a 15 minute break.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

It can be either, but I think it works best as skirmish with mostly infantry battles.

Reinforced Platoons is about as high as it goes with no edits to the rules. This means a full platoon (foot or mechanized) with something attached.
You can go higher, but that's when the reaction system starts to show it's flaws a bit since you can have so many different reactions and things that it gets clunky. But, it's an amazing system for platoon level and I love it dearly hahaha.
It is incredibly infantry centric though, 90% of the rules deal with infantry engagements. However, vehicles are covered quite well.
Unit stats...well as Easy E has said, there isn't much in terms of Infantry stats since the only things you really need to know are Troop Quality and Morale. There are a few other things, but those 2 are the core stats. Vehicle stats are a bit more complex, not by a lot, but the rulebook and Cold War Gone Hot scenario book has got everything I've ever needed. No army lists either, but they do come with OOB's that tell you the paper strength of different platoons from different armies (the core book has mostly all post 2000 lists, but the CWGH one is really nice).
