Howdy! I'm building a Black Templar 1500pt list to play with friends who are WAY more XP'd than i am at this game. I'd like to remain competitive and don't mind being unorthodox. Any help would be great! Thanks!

You know you're a Black Templar when...
...you refuse to ask a real life Librarian for help.

...Your friends wont invite you to any more magic shows after what happened.

...You don't care that it was a childrens' show, they should all know better anyway.

That's a silly list. I think 1 of those LR's only has the Emperor or Marshal in it. Or both. But 4 LRC is going to provide anything more than 2 or 3.

If you really wanted to run a LRC heavy army, you should at least run one with people inside that are going to do something. But that's up to you

Marshal
-TH/SS, Adamantine Mantle, Artificer Armour, Bionics

Champions w/ Arbor the Witch

10 Initiates with CCW/Pistol
-1 Melta/1 Powerfist
4 Neophytes
(In Land Raider Crusader - Heavy Support)

10 Initiates with CCW/Pistol
-1 Melta/1 Powerfist
4 Neophytes
(In Land Raider Crusader - Heavy Support)

8 Initiates with CCW/Pistol
-1 Melta/1 Powerfist
2 Neophytes
(In Drop Pod)

1500/1500

You don't always have to drop pod towards the enemy, sometimes I drop pod behind terrain and then move 12" + Flatout on my LRCs to complete LOS my Pod squad. Then I assault out of the LRCs. Afterwards I have the podded squad jump in. I constantly recycle the LRCs assault capability.

Edit: Just to clarify. Turn1 the pod comes in and your LRCs move 12" and PotMS the MM, or move 12" and then Flat Out to get completely in front of the drop pod squad if you couldn't do it with the first 12". On Turn 2, you turn the LRCs and move 6" then disembark 6" and assault if possible. Meanwhile, the Drop pod squad loads up in the now empty LRC. Rinse and repeat until you run out of Marines to assault with

It is very rock/paper/scissors. You'll win some and you'll lose some simply off of your list. But I have squeezed out wins against unfavored odds. 3 pretty durable troops choices is pretty good.

In a 1999+1 list, personally I run a duo-Land Raider list with 3 pods, a Dreadnought, and 3 Plasma bikers. The 3rd pod comes in empty (and Dread starts behind LRCs). The two other drop pods have 10man Crusader squads. 4 troops choice, 1 Elite, 1 Fast, and two Heavies. (With the same leaders as above, except I run my Marshal in TDA for the extra attack).

I like a Black Templar gunline. 5 marines with missile launcher/flamer and a few scout meatshields with shotguns is pretty cheap. Give those guys razorbacks with lascannons for more fire support/cover(if you add more than 1 scout, you need to take rhinos, so it's a tradeoff. More ranged fire power or something you can shoot the missile launchers out of) and add vindicators and Lascannon/Missile launcher dreads to taste. Granted, there are no good HQs for this style of list and all of the vows are pretty much worthless to it, but hey!

Saythings,
thanks i think ill use that for now, i can better afford that, three LRCs is a little much as i have none right now. I do however have a drop pod and new tactical marines are in the process of becoming BT Crusaders. thanks for all the help and keep em coming. I think this will help others too, as not as many of us play templars anymore, mostly the SW and BA armies, as far as SM go.

No problem!

In my opinion, Black Templars aren't the most competitive army out of the Chapters, however, the list I've been playing around with is their best chance. (Once again, opinionated. I also only CC-oriented armies more than the next fellow). You can go gunline army, but there are other armies you can do that with more success, I might add. The duo Land Raiders (with Blessed Hull), improved Deny the Witch bonus. triple Plasma Bikers, and Tank Hunter Dread take advantage of some of the BT's niche bonuses.

They are extremely unique and all have their own place in 6th edition metas. The list is rock, paper, scissors, but it's about as competitive as this 4th codex is going to get. I don't think I'm going to change much in my list at my FLGS tournys until BT get a 6th edition codex.

Good luck though!

BT are pretty fun to play imo. I run them as allies to my Deathwing, and steamroll with two Land Raiders. They are a great meatshield to my boys in white

I think one of the best things this army has going for it are its ridiculously awesome characters you can build. Marshalls and Chaplains can become absolute close-combat monsters. The TH/SS with artificer and adamantine mantle is downright ridiculous haha. I make this chaplain for a few less points I think.

My hero is the highest tier chaplain with:
- Crozius, bolt pistol, rosarius
- Power Fist
- Adamantine Mantle
- Artificer armor
- Frags

Combined with a 14 man crusader squad with power fist and melta, this guy can basically own any other character in cc, with the exception of the likes of abaddon, Logan, etc. He has great durability, makes the squad re-roll hits etc. and can be used with the pistol and maul against hordes or the fist and pistol against MEQ/TEQ / MCs. Last game I believe he karate chopped three CSM Khorne bikers to death and didn't even get hurt. He was a champ.

Best of luck with your BT. I like that new players are still fielding them, as they are unfortunately pretty absent these days :/

BTs do have some pretty good HQs since you can equip them pretty much any way you want to. Including the option of Eternal Warrior.

As to Varden's comment, I'd argue giving the Chaplain TDA rather than Artificer armor is better because you would get Terminator's Honour for the extra attack and keep the 2+ save for a cheaper price. But that limits the capacity of the squad if you put them all in a LRC. So take that advice with a grain of salt.

Another thing to note, if you're running BT as your main army, the Marshal's ability to give his L10 to everyone in the army outperforms the Chaplain's rerolls to hit. If you are running them as an ally, however, you generally only take 1 troops choice and a Chaplain might be exactly what you're looking for. I think a BT Chaplain leading an Allied force might just be exactly what some armies are looking for.

Thanks Gents,
I never thought to use a thunder hammer w/ SS for my Marshal, mostly since i use a Legion Praetor in Cataphractii Armour w a PS. May have to buy another model. heheh. My two VIN seem to be working well, IF they roll alright. (Last game rolled two boxcars on direct hits, yet damage ended up snakeyes! I think i need to throw out those dice!) Goin in today with my LRC army to see what i can kill. More neophyte fodder may be req though.
