Subject: Aegis Defense Lines - when does it give cover?

I recently had a situation where the enemy was behind an aegis line when my troops got close enough to be b2b with the other side of the wall. Accordingly, a couple of troopers were up against the little dips where the sections connect, and could therefore see the enemy down to his boots, despite the fact that we were on opposite sides of the wall. He argued that the book says "Models behind an aegis line..." overrides the need to be 25% obscured. Furthermore, he claimed that aegis lines come with a designated "front" and back" when they are set up. So my guys would not gain the same benefit from his shooting.
Is this correct, or was he reading too far into it? I was under the impression that once the game begins purchased fortifications are not 'owned' by anyone, and that the "front" of the thing is subjective based on the POV of the firing model.

I'm not aware of "facings" regarding to the ADL rules-wise.
To me "Behind ..." refers to the line of sight of the shooter coming across the line, not the direction on the "U"-shaped sections

Your reading is the right one, his is wishful thinking. The only rule that defines what is blocked by something that provides cover is Line of Sight.

I figured that the aegis line would still require things to be 25% obscured, or there would just be too many schenanigans you could pull with it. Thanks for the input.

I agree with you on how the ADL works.
But, I played against a guy that said as long as his ADL is between my unit and his he gets the cover save. Even when I had my Riptide in BSB with the ADL and his unit was like 6" back from the ADL.
And a question of my own. When a unit is controlling/in BSB with the quad gun is the quad gun considered a member if that unit? So a 10 man FW squad in BSB with the quad gun can have11 models under a blast template? Of if the 10 FW take 12 wounds from the Doom of Malantai, do the extra wounds go onto the Quad gun?

Nope, TLOS.

No, it's not a member of the squad in any way.

Hmmm, that time of the week again. *resets clock
When does it give cover?
When it blocks 25% of the model in question.
Seriously, why is this such a difficult thing. You get cover when you are 25% obscured.
And no, the Quad-gun is never a member of the unit controlling it. It is a separate thing entirely. So if you have 10 FWs and the Quad-gun under a blast. The FW unit will take 10 hits and the Quad-gun will take its own hit on its statline.

The only way to guarantee a cover save is if you were to go to ground behind the ADL. The ADL then specifically grants a +2 to the cover save for going to ground instead of the normal +1. So in the open and less than 25% obscurred, the unit would receive a 5+ cover save IF it goes to ground.

You still require obscurement to get any bonus to GTG.

Not true. You can GTG in open terrain for a 6+ save.
Since the ADL says you get +2 for GTG behind it, though, that indicates a facing, so you wouldn't get it if the direction of the attack is also behind the ADL.

GTG is not really the issue. You have to be behind for the bonus.. How do you define behind? If I can see your entire body, your not behind it. However if your at least 25% covered, now you can claim your "behind" cover.

I take it as meaning if you GtG and are also qualifying for the ADL cover save, you get +2 to all saves given by the wall itself.
So the +2 only applies to the ADL cover save.

Indeed, otherwise you are just going to ground in the open for the +1.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I recall that if a model in the unit being shot is 25% obscured by at least 1 firing model, it gets cover.
Even if a couple of your models could see it completely, it gets cover because others can't.
