I've been tinkering with my Necrons for over a week now and I've noticed that the units in IA 12 are particularly powerful. The Tesseract Ark, Sentry Pylons, Tomb Stalker and Charnel Scarabs are all really good units in a codex which is already insanely powerful.

The Ark.
A really tough tank that has an answer to nearly any ground based unit. It's better than the Monolith and can sure up a Mech list with it's power.

Sentry Pylons.
These things give the Necrons yet more great shooting potential. They are on a fairly stable base and have weapons for every job. My personal favourite configuration is the Heat Cannon and it will not die. At 190 per gun, it is very expensive, but look at what you get. A two shot str 10 Melta Cannon with blast at 36". This gun is crazy. It can kill any vehicle in one salvo and really put the hurt on infantry. ATM, I'm taking two and the tally of kills has been extraordinary. You could also deep strike them, but this is very expensive and a little pointless as these things have great range.

Tomb Stalker.
It's been mentioned before. This is a good MC, with lots of attacks and something that can give most armies a lot of headaches.

Charnel Scarabs.
I use these guys to take out flanking units and murder non TH Terminator squads. Rending with that many attacks is great. I take 8 bases and they have yet to fail me. If the enemy shoot them, they are not shooting the rest of my army. If they don't shoot, those 8 bases are going to be nomming face early in the game.

Toholk.
This is THE guy. Probably the best SC the Necrons can take. He gives the army +or- 1 to all reserve rolls. This is a major boon for Cron Air players and those that like to use a reserve shenanigan list. He also makes D3 vehicles better by giving them it will not die. Great for Barges and Night Scythes, but it also makes the Tesseract Ark and Monolith really tough to crack.

I dunno if anyone else has been playing around with IA 12 and has come up with the same results or thoughts, but this book makes the Necrons even more nasty and a lot more fun to play.

I haven't picked up IA12 yet but I know the guys over at NecronTyrOnline.com are all about the Tesseract Ark and from what I've gathered, it is a more menancing threat then our already awesome Annihilation Barges.

It's also just under 3 times the cost. But holy crap, is it worth it. Two words: EVERYTHING DIES!

Also AV14 side and frontal armor until penned and one of the funkiest main guns I've ever seen.

It's a very interesting unit, that if you go heavy mech, it's an auto include, especially over the Monolith.

To any Necron players, I recommend IA12. Great book with amazing rules.

It can simultaneously troll horde and elite armies thanks to it's "anything charging this chews on dangerous terrain" rule and "totally not a plasma destroyer" gun.

Has anyone tried the Heat Cannon Pylons?

They have been über impressive, eventhough they are a little expensive. 350 for two of them, but you are dropping four str 10 ap 1 Melta shots per turn.

I love them to death. "Now you see your parking lot, now you don't." It's like a magic trick.

Ok I'm seeing great things but is it 40k approved? Or just for fun or apoc games?

Yeah, I faced Orks with them and they took out 16 Orks in a massive mob and killed them the following turn. The Barge and Scythes done the rest. These things are great vs Eldar too.

I've made a 1250 point list, I'd be grateful if you guys could take a look at it:

Thanks.

I buy the IA12 book because I was interested in the Krieg list. But since I look again and again the necron list, the Ark, the Night Shroud and everything in the list, I just wanted to stop what I'm painting and buy some necron.

How are Arcanthrites? I'm thinking of picking up a trio, and use those instead of wraiths. Wraiths are too mainstream, man.

I've not tried them. They seem really subpar as their weapons are really short ranged and they lack an invulnerable save, but they do come in bigger squads.

Ai, but they have higher toughness, shroud and entropic strike.

IWND on any Necron vehicle is nasty, but it's really good on the T.Ark.

That's the thing about Toholk. He's incredible for his points. Buck 25 gets you the reserve shenanigans and D3 IWND vehicles.

Wow... ok, didn't read that bit. Might still be too big a target and scarabs can hug cover better and do the same job.

Unlike scarabs, they cannot be instant killed by S6 blast weapons. They are more than double the price though :/

My mistake, they have stealth, not shroud. They do have 3 wounds though.

Pylons are just silly. I'd almost want to do a list with like 9 of them just to see what the heck happens lololol.

I've tried three and it was too much. Too many points. Even the dmg was overkill, especially with Heat Cannons. It's funny enough with two when you can kill a Hive Tyrant and Tyrant Guard in one volley. I've also smashed a full Paladin squad in one turn with them. That's over 750 points killed by a 350 point unit. But by the same token, they evaporate everything those blasts touch.

They are killers without peer, but I wouldn't ever take more than two. That seems to be the sweet spot.

Kill all the flyers!

If I pick up the sentries, I'd probably go for 1 heat and 1 annihilator, or maybe 2 annihilators.

Why take anti flyer tech when we have the Barge and our own flyers that murder opposing aircraft?

Keeps them cheap I suppose.

I found the barge to be unreliable when killing flyers. I just don't roll enough sixes. Necron flyers are useless against Eldar flyers; they just have the mobility to target them.

OTOH, I've had a single annihilation barge shot take out a stormraven 5/7 times against my friend with GK.

You must be very good at rolling at sixes then

How survivable are the pylons anyway? How do you stop them from dying to lascannons?

You can't stop them from dying from Lascannons.

IWND can mitigate this somewhat, but toughness 7 and 3 wounds a piece is pretty resilient.

Taking units of two help aswell.
