Brain-Dead Zombie of Nurgle

Eye of Terror

Hey guys, I'm building my first tabletop army and I was gonna shoot for 1500 points. Lemme Know if this seems viable

HQ: Chaos Lord with Murder sword and Dimensional key

Troops:
2x10 CSM w/ two plasma guns and a combi-plas
2x Rhino Transports

Elites:
7x Plague Marines

Fast Attack:
6x Raptors

Heavy Support:
3x Obliterators

Please respond with any recommendations, ideas or good tactics. Thanks!

There are countless tactics you could use, but since your brand new to the game dont worry about tactics yet. First you have to worry about learning the game. 1500Pts is a lot of points for a first list, it will take a huge amount of time to finish a 1500Pt game when you still arent sharp on the rules. Models are also really expensive, so if you arent completely sure you want those models then I'd suggest starting smaller. When I first started playing I started with maybe 500-700Pt games. This helps you get used to the rules, the feel of them game, and maybe even give you the ability to look at things and see how each model works, its good and bad points etc.

Since your playing chaos I can help you accurately, as chaos is my newest of my 4 armies.

If your serious about starting an army, then I'd go ahead with buying the Rhinos since they're a big part of most armies, and its hard not to use them haha. They transport your units around, though get destroyed easily.

Raptors are basic jump infantry, they move twice as fast as normal infantry and are designed to charge into combat with good results.

The chaos lord is very adaptable, and you could build him a ton of different ways, all to fit your needs. I would say stick to 1 or 2 chaos artifacts max per army, and only 1 per character as they are extremely expensive items. You also want to think about which unit you want to place your independent character in, and whether your character will be supporting a unit, your army, ect, or if the unit hes in will be supporting him. If you want him to join the Raptors you need to purchase him a jump pack, or else he would be slowing them down, making them useless, also he cant join your CSM troop choices because you have 10 each in a rhino, and the rhinos capacity is 10 models, so you would have to take a CSM out of a unit to let him join. Remember though, when playing CSM you want to use your marks. If you give your lord a Mark of Nurgle, your plague marine squad would become a troop choice.

In 40k the more troop choices the better, because they are the only type of units that could capture objectives, unless the mission states otherwise, 83% of missions, 5/6 missions are objective based.

Plague Marines are tough to kill, they're tanky shooters. They are harder to kill than normal marines, but they don't put out more damage than regular ones. Personally I find too expensive for my tastes, and I stick with giving other units mark of nurgle for the extra toughness instead. Some people like them a lot though. In a smaller game I would proxy them using regular marines to see how you like the way they play. They are excellent at holding objectives.

The normal CSM troops are good units to start with, although when you begin getting much better and getting more advanced at the game you'll find that the codex gets much bigger offering tons more things you could do once you understand them. You'll learn about allied detachments, and fortifications as well.

In a real game between players who understand the rules, that 1500Pt list would get wiped out so easily, thats why its important to learn more and more about the game, the rules, and what your codex has to offer. Something else you'll learn with time is what kind of threats your army will face, what your weaknesses, are, what your vulnerable to specifically, such as you have no air defense against flyers, or you dont have enough armor, or not enough anti-armor. If you dont have enough threat, or anti-infantry.

Its an overwhelming game when you first start, but after reading through the rulebook a few times, reading through your codex, and other codexs, you start to understand all of the context. With every game you play you'll slowly learn more and get better at it.

How did you get into 40k? Do you have any friends who started with you, or are more advanced or former players?

A broad mind lacks focus.

Drop the dimensional key because it is too much work to trigger and give the lord a MoN so your plague marines are troops. Do not even bother deepstriking your raptors or oblits. Just start with them on the board, then move and shoot them each turn if you need to. Give your raptors 2 melta guns so they can move 12" behind a tank and pop it open.

Give the plasma guns to the Plague marines since they get fnp when it gets hot! In fact, just paint all your csm green so they can become plague marines too. Consider giving your rhinos combi-meltas so you can have the rhino shoot and pop a transport first then you can have the disembarked plague marines rapid fire into the troops. Give their champ a meltabomb so they can attempt to charge the rear armor if combi melta failed.

at the moment, split your oblits into 3 slots so you can shoot 3 different targets. In a group of 3, losing just 1 will force a leadership test which it could fail. Later on when you get more oblits or other heavy support units, rejoin the 3 oblits into 1 slot.

typical progression of csm player

start off with what they thought was cool (often khorne bezerkers or thousand sons)-->t;Several squads of plague marines-->minimal squads of plague marines (trade staying power for fire power as they learn to avoid danger)--&gt consider the xeno killing power of noise marines (cost less and are still fearless)-->;regular csm (they learn to minimize cost on troop to spend it elsewhere)-->4 squads of 10 cultist (at this point they are just held in reserved to be obj holders) all the other points are spent on very killy units.

oh btw, some people will tell you to get a drake or two. If you consider buying one, try to kit bash and convert it so you can some how make 2 or even 3 if you use so much green stuff (or the cheaper grey stuff). Otherwise fill those fast slots with more raptors, spawns or bikes. In fact, a Lord with MoN on a bike can join a group of Spawns with MoN.

I'm actually really surprised no one's started shouting heldrakes yet. lol (seriously look into that unit and its rules, they're formidable)

In the meantime since your a bit new. Take a look at the codex and choose the 3 coolest looking models. ALWAYS a great way to start an army

Good luck to ya

Just gonna throw this out there, the murder sword is cool and all, but pretty situational. The Black Mace is my (and many people's) favorite artifact and is quite killy. Just a thought.
