Hi dakka as it says in the title I'm wondering about taking some hobby materials with me for a few days interstate - namely wet dry sandpaper and my hobby knife to attack mould lines if the opportunity presents itself. I'm worried about the hobby knife in my luggage though - should I not bother considering current security?

Are you seriously asking dakka whether or not its ok to bring a knife on a plane? ( its not ok anywhere btw) if its in the luggage compartment some places might not bother but carry-on... im sure youre smarter than that

Just buy one for cheap when you get there. Will save you a lot of potential trouble. Then again, I have taken knives in my luggage (not carry on) for work, withou the slightest of trouble.

If it's not in your carry on but in your checked in luggage this is usually not a problem unless it's two sticks of play-dough hooked up to an alarm clock. They will probably tear your bag open for that one.

Generally as long as it's in your luggage and stored away in the baggage hold of the plane then you're fine. It's no potential threat to the passengers if it's locked away beneath their feet. On the other hand, if you plan on taking it in your hand luggage, prepare for arrest and extensive questioning, or at the very least losing said knife on a permanent basis.

Checked luggage, that's fine.
Hand Luggage, not so much.
When I fly with modelling tools I keep them in a pencil case in my hold luggage.

Yeah checked luggage is fine, but not in the cabin, ever. I've taken my hobby knife and a chunky dive knife to Bali three times and never a word, but I wouldn't pack it where I could get to it during the flight.

Just looked it up to confirm that you could actually take a pocket knife on a plane in the US. Apparently they changed their mind. Darn...I hate having to leave my knife behind if I don't check any luggage.

Got no advice for you other than check it and you'll be fine. I always just throw my pocket knife(s...got a multitool with some blades on it that probably counts) in my checked luggage haphazardly and never got them taken away.

Thanks everyone. I apologise i should have clarified about checkin/carry-on luggage - i havent flown for nearly seven years!
A hairdresser i know wasnt allowed to take her work scissors set so im well aware of restrictions with carryon. I double checked the airline apparently even firearms are allowed in checkin luggage, with whatever precautions are required etc - a small hobby knife shouldn't be an issue. As an additional measure I've separated the blade from the handle and popped it in the spares container. Hopefully that should be responsible and safe enough for Australian airport security.
