"A medieval role-playing game somewhere between Ravenloft, Game of Thrones and Call of Cthulhu."

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1176616619/shadows-of-esteren-a-medieval-horror-rpg-travels

Shadows of Esteren is a French medieval/fantasy RPG for English release by Studio2. They put together a successful KS for the first book in the series about this time last year. Here's how they described it:
Shadows of Esteren is a medieval role-playing game, with an emphasis on the horrific and the Gothic. Drawing inspiration from Celtic myths, this universe has a discreetly fantastic side hidden under a bleak, realistic surface. This world is populated with humans who have to cope with tough daily lives, and face a supernatural threat lurking in the dark. With the focus of its adventures being investigation and survival, Shadows of Esteren is a game that favors an immersive mood and interactions among the Players.
The current KS is for Book 2: Travels -- which covers descriptions of places, gallery of characters, scenarios, and a bestiary. They plan to deliver by October and have designed the KS around avoiding delivery delays.

And here's a taste of the art:

Got the first book from their KS and it's one of the most gorgeous books I own, let alone being the standard edition. I'll level, though. If it's funded, unless they start pumping out free extras with the $40 pledge level, I'd wait for retail. I can now get for $38 what I paid $50 in the original KS.

Excellent point. I'm going to stick with this while the KS extras develop and if they're no good to me (e.g., a bunch of PDFs) I will drop out and wait for amazon. The key point here is that I want the product.

Precisely. It's an incredible product, beautiful book, AWESOME game! I recommend picking this up, no question. Also, the LE version, I'm sure, will astound like it did last time.

It seems pretty interesting. How well did they stick to their dates with their first kickstarter?

I don't know about the first one at all. Circumstantially, I think the second one was quite late. This is the third one and they seem pretty serious about keeping it on track. So I expect that means the KS bonuses will be digital or stuff that's already done.

The first one was ALMOST on time. It was delivered maybe 6 weeks late? Possibly closer to on-time. It's definitely my closest to being on time project to date!

Well, at least they delivered. And maybe three kickstarters in they got a better handle on it. I've gotten to where my kickstarter delivery expectations are pretty loose, but it's good to know their history anyway.

The Varigal level is calling to me... Has anyone run a game with it? From what I gathered from the kickstarter, it seems like characters might be railroaded into acting certain ways with how their haracter building section puts emphasis on traits like stubborn or reckless. What I mean is it sounds like the game plays the character for you.
