So, right before the Embargo on Rest of World sales, I purchased an almost obscene number of Ork models, as I am relatively new to the game, played a few matches with Marines but never really clicked with their visual style, and figured Orks best suited me. I've always liked their fluff (and also 40K and WFB fiction, which actually got me into the models/game in the first place, though it took about 20 years).

I finally have time to think about this, and having just completed a day of knifework on Boyz (the AoBR ones are a painus), I want some advice on were to go next with what I have.

I have built/cleaned/primed (ready to be painted):

60 slugga/choppa boyz (some AoBR, some standard)

AoBR Warboss

3 AoBR Nobz

Almost ready (i.e. need knifework and priming)

15 more AoBR Nobz

6 Standard Nobz (2-3 have PK)

1 AoBR Nob w/PK

about an additional 30 choppa/slugga boyz (some AoBR, some standard)

in progress:

1 Trukk

8 shoota boyz

On sprues, in boxes:

Gazkgul Thraka

2 AoBR warbosses

90 boyz (standard as opposed to AoBR)

30 Grots (3 boxes)

10 Loota/burnas (and looks like parts for an additional 5)

10 Nobz (standard)

12 Bikes with extra parts to make lots of them into Nobz

3 Trukks

2 Battlewagons

9 Killa Kanz

3 Deff Dreds

1 Stompa

2 boxes Tankbustas

an indeterminate number of deffkoptas (the dog got the bag of them and mangled some: I have at least three intact)

questions:

So, this isn't what to buy next (a Big Mek w/kff, probably this weekend).

This is I think I have a viable Green Tide for low point games almost ready to table, what should I build next for a bit more variety? Or should I just keep building squads of boyz?

Also, what tends to be more useful with the new rule set (which I haven't bought yet), Big Shoota or Rockit Launcha? I've got a a few AoBR Big Shoota guys, but haven't built any rockit launcha ones yet. How many should I build (I plan to overbuild squads by a couple troops to have all the options)?

Finally--are shoota boyz better in the current edition? What propotion of remaining boyz should be shoota as opposed to slugga/choppa?

Holy hell you have your work cut out for you. The last thing I bought for Orks was a dakkajet and meganobz. Don't make my mistake! I've got 5k painted and still don't have a Deff dread. Put the kanz together last. They're ok but less so in 6th. Wait a sec... No big Mek's?! U need two KFFs ASAP.

Most new Ork players feel like Green Tide is how they want to play, but in some cases the sheer number of models to build, paint, and move around the board etc is just overwhelming and can lead to a lot of frustration.

I suggest the Nob Bikers, because they are the opposite of a Green Tide. A handful of models that cost a ton, allowing you to compensate if you find that a Green Tide is just too model heavy - swap out 100 boys for 12 Biker Nobs to lighten the load!

Take those 90 generic boyz, and the loota's/burnas. bulid as many loota's as you can and take the bodies of the Gen. boyz to make burnas.

Burnas are great in a battlewagon, amazingly so, but it usually only works once on an opponent. you'll use the lootas more but burnas are fun.

Make the rest shootas, you have enough cc orks, if 60 can't get the job done more won't. 40-80 shootas is... almost unfair.

hold off on the kanz and dreads. They are cool, look great and effective last edition, but you'll need lots of experience with the current edition and changes to orks to handle them maginally effectively. though they work well against a pure grey knight list.

Dakkamite is kinda correct, 12 bikes is good, but it's around 285 pts. upgraded, and nobs only come in 10. at around 500-550 upgraded. I prefer 12 regular bikes over the nobs.

Grazzy is a tank, but he's more of a scalpel than a hammer. I think he's best left for after you have experience. In the beginning he is too many points to wield effectively. Though he works anywhere, you'll find you like him in a squad of meganobz most likely.

One squad of grotz is useful as a point filler and a scoring unit but are seriously tough as artillery.
