Perhaps my last opponent was still using the old codex (?) But I have the new daemon book now and I don't find anything about splitting your force in half for deep strike purposes... and further I cannot find where it says daemons can move and/or assault after deep strike... can someone point me to the right page, paragraph?

You don't. Daemons can now be deployed like any other army but every unit has deepstrike I believe.

And they definitely can't assault after Deep strike. The only real weird things you can do is use Instruments to deep strike 2 units at a time.

By the 37 keys of Tzeentch,We open the way for our brothers,
By the 1000 whispers of Slaanesh we call to them,
By the 12 plagues of Nurgle we fell their enemies,
And by the mighty axe of Khorne we cut open the world for them!
