Hello everyone

I'v been playing a Crimson Fist Drop Pod army centered around Pedro and Sternguard, and have decided to try out Imperial Guard as Allies for an upcoming 2000pt game.

I'm no Guard Player, and any feedback or advice is welcome!

Space Marine Detatchment: (1500pts)

HQ: (175pts)

Pedro

Elites: (680pts)

(1) 10 Man Sternguard Squad
5xCombi-Flamer, 4xCombi-Melta, Sgt with Combi-Melta and Melta Bombs
Drop Podb

(2) 10 Man Sternguard Squad
5xCombi-Flamer, 4xCombi-Melta, Sgt with Combi-Melta and Melta Bombs
Drop Pod

Troops: (360pts)

5 Man Scout Squad
3xSniper, Heavy Bolter, Sgt upgraded to Telion

10 Man Tactical Squad
MG, MM, Sgt w/ Combi-melta and Melta Bombs
Drop Pod

Heavy: (200pts)

(1) TFC

(2) TFC

Fortifications: (75pts)

ADL
Icarus Lascannon

Imperial Guard Detatchment: (500pts)

HQ: (125pts)

Company Command Squad
Carapace Armor, Vox Caster, Cammo Cloaks, Master of Ordinance

Infantry Platoon: (375pts)

Platoon Command Squad
Vox Caster, Plasmagun, Commisar

(1)Infantry Squad
Vox Caster, Plasmagun

(2)Infantry Squad
Vox Caster, Plasmagun

(1)Heavy Weapon Squad
3x Autocannons

(2)Heavy Weapon Squad
3x Autocannons

So, I plan on alpha striking with the Sternguard, and possibly the tac squad in a later round, and keeping the rest in the backfield to chew away at the enemy.

I have never used guard, so the idea here is to get an infantry blob to camp my backfield in cover to spread out and provide a meat shield for my TFCs. Not sure if they will be behind ADL or in Techmarine enhanced ruins, will depend on the board

My current meta doesn't have alot of fliers, so the Icarus should handle that (Though I hate leaving my Contemptor Mortis behind), but I'm hopping I can use orders to buff my heavy weapon squads (Bring it Down!) to deal with low AV fliers

No idea how it will fare, but I came into possession of some beautifully painted guard infantry units and I'm dying to get them on the board .

I currently have no Armor (like I said, was a lucky find) but am open to advice in this area.

Thanks for looking

I'm leary of the Master of Ordnance and his less-than-reliable scatter pie plate. I used to play guard and stopped using the MoO after the second game I used him because the plate never lands on or near it's target. Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal but with all of those DS'ing Sternguard (which I'm assuming are going to be landing very close to the enemy lines) you don't want to risk a pie plate scattering onto them. Remember, the plate from the MoO always scatters. When I use any DS'ing troops such as Sternguard I try to avoid pie plates and stick to direct fire weaponry. YMMV.

A verry valid point OIF. My thoughts were that i would use him synergistically with pedro (also gets orbital) to keep pressure on his units furthest from my sterns. I tend to use the TFC for mid-range stern support, and of course they handle their own short range shooting

I tend to deploy one one end of the board and generally try to roll my opponent up from that corner to the oposite one along his long edge. If done propperly the plates shouldnt come near the stern. Worse case scenario i can always jst choose not to use them.

That said its untried and i totally agree that my MMV

If i drop him where would you suggest i put the points?

Any Guard Players have any advice?

Heavy Weapons squads are rather mediocre. I'd suggest trading them out for a vendetta.

Honestly I would try to work a libby in there, prescienced stern guard is a super nasty combo. I like the setup on the sternguards, though I would drop the melta bombs. Interesting sniper build using a HB, curious as to how that works. I like the tac squad. 2 TFC is solid and gross. I have never taken the icarus so I wont speculate there. As to the guard detach, I could see dropping the CCS for a comparably cost pair of primaris psykers. the psykers put out much more damage. If you're blobbing the platoon I would put the commissar in there as the PCS is so small and not as important. I personally am perfectly fine with AC teams. Overall I think this could be a very solid list.

As a guard player myself, i kinda find certain upgrades a waste (vox casters, camo cloaks, carapace armours, any Veterans Doctrine, special weapons over 5 points in BS 3 units..), you have to be mindful that T3 AS5+ models will die easily, anything that sneezes at them will kill them, and any extra upgrades they have is just tossing points in the dumpster.
I usually take my infantry squads with just a flamer/grenade launcher and a Autocannon/Missile Launcher and drop them in area terrain/cover to hold objectives, keep the sergeant save for the LD8 and go to ground everytime you get over 3 wounds to the unit. Weapons like meltaguns or plasmas should only be taken in Veteran units or Company Command Squads and then they become a non-camping unit, so just put them in chimeras or vendettas.
I also agree that the Master of Ordenance is too random, so i would leave him home. Heavy Weapon Teams have the problem that are "solo units", so they can be targeted directly by S6+ shots and insta killed easily, especially if you have many dreadknight-incenerator-wielding lists.
Keep your cheap units the cheapest possible, use them as "this 60 point infantry squad is gonna get me 3 points for holding this objective in the end of the game". Veterans are awesome with like 3 Meltas, 3 Plasmas or 2 Meltas and 1 heavy flamer (gives you options if you have them inside a vendetta, so they can be either anti-tank or anti-mass-infantry). My favorite CCS build is 4x plasmaguns inside a chimera, just play tacticaly with it and have it decimate a high priority target with rapid fire plasma guns at BS4 (TL if you go after a MC). Playing IG is all about prioritizing targets, why toss a LR battle tank shell on a Tervigon to maybe deal it 1 wound, if you can pie plate some hive guards or rapid-closing-gaunts and let your plasma gunners deal with the tervigon,
In your list, i would use IG to be cheap objective holders and maybe take a Leman Russ or Manticore and a Vendetta. Oh and don't take heavy weapons on vets, you usually want them mobile so they can reach the valuable targets fast

Well not sure as why you have a commissar in your PCS, the squad is only 6 people and most of the time they will get shot to death or killed in melee before any of them strike. A commissar is best used in blobs that of which the PCS cannot join

If your using the MoO and a drop pod army your already asking to kill your own guys because the blast will always scatter its s9 ap3, if you get to close to your opponent which you will since you have flamers and melta guns and then try to drop that template you will kill your own guys. Also in order to fire the MoO the CCS cannot move. So all your guard squads with the voxs are gunna sit back and just sit on objectives and do nothing.

I would ditch the plasma guns and the HWS and give each infantry squad a lascannon instead so they can sit back and provide supporting fire.

Heavy weapon squads are insta killed by s6 and after they lose one model they take a LD test which their LD is only 7 so plan on them running, also if you have all these squads in the back I would suggest getting a regimental standar for your CCS so your guys reroll failed moral tests.

Hope this helps

I would drop carapace on command squad, camo cloaks are all you need.

Master of ordnance is a personal favorite of mine but extremely non competitive. He has never made his points back for me

Give your infantry squads an autocannon, autocannon/plasma gun is pretty good combo (they both shoot the same thing, roughly)

Drop auto cannon heavy weapon squads for a vendetta (best tank buster ever) it will also allow you to drop the Icarus and dominate your low flier meta game

If you want a meat wall I cannot recommend conscripts enough. Their horrible at fighting but their as hardy (snicker) as regular guard for 1 less point, large enough squads mean that horrible leadership should never be a problem. They are however horrible against fast assault units.

Wow, thanks for the advice guys!

I'm kinda clueless with the guard but will be re-writting the list shortly to make use of your tips and tricks

Looks like I might have to start shopping around for a Vendetta
