Why is it that some codexes of the same edition are more or less expensive than other ones? Is GW hinting toward popularity (raised prices) or are they dropping prices of books that are near an update?

The Space Marine Codex is $41, while the Ork Codex and several others are all $33.
The Chaos Space Marine Codex is $50, while the Dark Angels codex is $49.50

What's up with that?

Well, the $33 codices are probably all older 5th ed. Maybe the Ultramarine one is more because its bigger or slightly newer. The CSM and DA are 6th ed and so have 6th ed prices

I just wish I could buy the codices for Nook e-readers since I don't own an IPad.

The Vanilla Space Marine Codex has 144 pages. The Grey Knights one (using the Codex I had within grasping distance) has 96.

The 5ed space marine is bigger than other codexs I've seen. I'd think that combined with GW cashing in on their most popular faction is the reason for the higher prices.

The Dark Angels, Eldar, Tau, and Chaos codices are all hardcover and full color, and cost more. Most codices are from 5th and markedly cheaper since they're in black and whtie and softcover. Orks and Black Templars had their codices released in 4th edition, so are less again. The one outlier is Codex: Space Marines, which is priced a little higher because it's a larger codex than any others at the time.

You can now.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
