Alright, I've been off and on painting space marines for about the last two decades now but with the (not so recent) release of the Dark Vengeance box set I figured it would be a good time to actually try and get something finished. I have (as I imagine most hobbyists do) a ridiculous amount of bare plastic kicking about and really need to put in some effort to see it transformed into something a little more interesting. Been some time since I actually played the game, but then the modelling/painting side was always the bit I enjoyed most anyways.

Seeing some of the work on these pages it is impossible not to be inspired (and in most cases awed). To that end i am creating this project log in an effort to further aid my motivation by means of seeing the (hopefully) regular progress. I have so far assembled the tactical marines, terminators and the librarian, planned to do the terminators first, then the tactical's with the libbie the 'prize' at the end.

So a few pictures to get it started -

Group shot all built and undercoated:

I went for a black undercoat on the tactical marines and a grey for the librarian and terminators.

A quick search of the internet prior to commencing the deathwing brought me to this page: http://loserstudio.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/how-to-paint-dark-vengence-deathwing.html
(an excellent site well worth checking out if you haven't done so already).

I liked the look LilLoser achieved and decided to go for something similar with a few colour changes to match my personal prefences and (primarily) skill level!

The first four squad members are pretty much complete:

I'm working on the squads sergeant at the moment and managed to get a little more progress done this evening:

So let me know what you think so far and I'll try and get some more done during the rest of this week, should have him pretty much done by weeks end (so long as I stop slacking!)

Those are some great looking Deathwing! The two-tone wings on the sergeant are especially nice. I'm working on Dark Vengeance, myself... there's a link to the blog in my sig if you'd care to check it out. So far I've done one of the tac squads and the Librarian.

Looks fantastic man, Whats your plans for the sword on the Serg? You going for something contrasting?

Looking forward to the updates.

Thanks Owain, I wasn't too sure on the two tone wings myself but I'm glad you liked them, I've since given them a black wash to try and tie the colours a bit closer together. I took a peek at your blog and I really like the bronze accents you achieved on the tactical's armour, especially on the shoulder trim.

Vossyvo: I'm not too sure on the sword yet, I've just basecoated it white for now. I was considering using the airbrush technique aptly demonstrated here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7me7OB3XP0&feature=c4-overview&playnext=1&list=TLNlvCMCm_ZE4 as much to give it a try as anything else. Blue looks like a good colour choice too.

Back to painting, I'll stick some updated pictures up towards the end of the week.

Ok so finally completed the Sergeant:

Tried to airbrush the sword innitially and it didn't look too bad but had some issues with the masking tape I was using pulling up the paint, so I settled with just blending the sword lighter toward the tip. I'll have to get some decent masking stuff to give the airbrush tutorial a proper go as it was looking promising (and fairly quick and easy to boot).

I took an updated pic of the complete squad:

Which on the whole I'm pretty pleased with. Time to crack on with the tactical marines I think.

Ok so not a massive amount of progress this week as I was waiting on some paint for the tactical squad but just wanted to stick some pictures up to show I have made some progress!

Started on the first three as kind of 'test models' to get a green I liked. Just about done with the armour on the middle marine and I quite like the shade of green it turned out. I'll get the metallics finished off hopefully tomorrow and get the first one pretty much done.

While I was waiting on the paint for the tactical's I started on the ravenwing bikers and have built, undercoated, and made a start on the armour/bike (as in sprayed em black and dark grey....). I'll try and progress these this week too.

Nice work on termies. Love it.

I'm also working on my DA, but i went for black n blue color scheme. Poetic freedom, so to say.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks daNba, glad you like em.

I finally completed the first of the tactical marines, and am pretty happy with the result. Nothing spectacular but fairly solid and didn't take too long to produce. I'll try and get the rest of the squad squared away over the next week or so.

Thanks for looking!

Oh, this one is very nice too. Simple, quick and goodlookin´. Maybe some more pics from other angles so we can see backpack and stuff.

Ok been far too long but have been working on the tactical squad still, have another 5 complete with the last four on the go:

took a picture of from the back too, as suggested:

as before, nothing spectacular just trying to get them to a decent level and completed. Will try and get the last four done over the next week or so then crack on with the bikes and make a start on the Libby, although I'm still not decided with respect to the amount of 'blue' armour to with, need to think about that one!

Nice looking Dark Angels dude!
I'm painting mine from Dark Vengeance too, as I'm creating an army of them to go with my Blood Angels.

Looking forward to more!

Really cool looking force. The terminators have come out great, really liking that link and chipping effect.
Tacticals look are great too, cant wait to see what you do with the librarian.

Thanks guys much appreciated.

I got the last of the tactical's done:

and a full group shot:

Now to get to work on the Libby and the bikes. Gonna have to check out the IA article on librarians as I'm tempted to go for a primarily green scheme on the librarian, although most of his armour is taken up with robe anyway...

Finally got the Librarian to a satisfactory conclusion:

Front:

Back:

Sides:

Pictures are somewhat washed out but the best I can do for now, something else for me to work on. Overall a pleasant model to paint with, I think, just about the right level of detail. I should have painted up the face before putting him together but it came out ok. Next up the bike squad.

Alas Minimal progress on the Ravenwing bikers, need to double up on m efforts to get the first one completed so I get a feel for the scheme and get cracking with the other two... I have however got some better photo's of the Librarian:

Front:

Some updated photo's from the other angles in the gallery should that pique any interest.

I also managed to dig out some Flesh Tearer's I had started some time ago, I got a 5 man assault squad (Sans JP's) completed:

And have another 5 on the go as well as a Razorback:

I also have another Razorback and two Baal Predators primed and ready to make a start on. Main focus remains the bikers though... Honestly.

First (test) Biker completed. I think this is the first space marine biker I've painted (I do recall painting a few squat bikers quite some time ago though!). Did this one first to get a fell for how I wanted to paint them up. First use of weathering powders which came out ok, but I was a bit too subtle on bits of it especially the wheels, the varnishing process reined it all in and now it's difficult to see. Same with the bike panel lining and armour edging, could do with a bit less subtlety so something to work on for the sarge and plasma gunner.

More pics in the gallery of differing angles etc Still need to put some grass tufts on the base too!

Ok so progress on the bikes has been a little slow... I have made some progress honest and will definitely get them finished soon, probably. In the mean time I have been distracted by a MkIIb Land raider which I have had for some time and finally got it put together and undercoated. Looking to get the first coats of paint on the outside of it by the weekend, I did however paint the interior prior to putting the thing together and even took some (not so great...) pictures:

Left side:

Right Side:

Floor and Doors:

Decided to go for Iron Hands hence the transfers you can see on the interior. So hopefully by next week I'll have a bit more to show on the outside and maybe some finished bikes...

Progress made with the LR, all base colours applied and a few transfers added, took a few pictures after I had sealed prior to the wash and weathering stage:

Will see how I get on with the washing/weathering at the weekend, so perhaps more pictures soon, in the meantime I do have those bikes to finish off although a knight titan might prove something of a distraction...

Your green armour looks really good and the land raider interior is very nicely weathered and not overdone, which is nice. Sometimes it's easy to go overboard! The one colour that doesn't look as good as the others is the black. It could be the camera, but it doesn't look as distinct or well highlighted. But I appreciate black is difficult to do well!

Space Marine Scout with Sniper Rifle

Are you referring to the black on the RW bikers, the LR or both? The black on the bikers only really has some edge lining/highlighting. For the LR (with the larger flat surfaces) I airbrushed on some zenithal highlights of VMA black grey and VMA German grey, then did some edge highlighting with a light dry brush of a lighter shade of grey mixed in with some german grey, it's not so easy to pick up on in the photos though as I've put a coat of purity seal on it prior to putting on some washes. Hopefully by the time I finished it off and put top coat of matt varnish on it will still retain some tonal variation, but I'll be the first to admit, tonal variation with black is difficult to do without over doing it into grey or making it too subtle that it doesn't show. Still there's only one way to find out and that's to give it a go!

Completed the Land Raider last weekend but only just got around to taking (not great) photo's. Quite like how it came out, tried to keep a fairly utilitarian look as I feel that fits well with the Iron Hands but equally tried to put a few details in to keep it from looking too plain.

Got a couple of Deimos pattern rhinos I need to get done in the same fashion and plan to do a couple of tactical squads (got one built so far).

I also need to spend a bit of time and effort getting a decent setup to take the pictures, I've been reading around and tried a few different things (different lighting etc) but I'm not that happy with any of the pictures I've taken so far. I guess the main thing is to keep trying different methods and eventually I'll hit on something that works for me! Anyway let me know what you think.

Been assembling and magnetizing the imperial knight - an impressive model that comes as a nice kit. As has been said elsewhere shame about the price tag and the static legs. I figured I'd have a go modifying the legs and cut the left one at the knee joint (a fairly simple option and easy enough to achieve) I then re-positioned it slightly higher 'up' the knee joint giving a slight step up without the need to modify the foot (which would be a pain). Just required changing the hose/piston at the thigh joint which were easy enough to green stuff and cut down.

I magnetized as much as a I could while I was putting it together (last shot shows all the loose components) so the weapons are switchable and most of the plates can be removed, I plan to just glue the lower leg armour plates on as that's just easier! Still need to do a load of gap/mould line filling and smoothing to be carried out before I can prime it and make a start on the metal 'skeleton'. Still got no idea on overall scheme but luckily some really nice knights have cropped up on here so I can just shamelessly copy them!

So finally completed the Ravenwing bikers from the DV box:

Sergeant:

Plasma Gunner:

and a group shot:

Also completed an Iron Hands Techmarine a while back:

Been working on a tactical squad, two rhinos and a couple of dreadnought for the Iron Hands too so will hopefully get a few pictures of that soon. Knight has been undercoated and looking to get the skeleton metals done so hopefully a bit of progress on that to come as well.

Progress on the Imperial Knight, Base pretty much done, just needs varnish and static grass. For the knight itself I decided to paint the whole thing in a base metal with a view to using the hairspray technique to allow me to take off areas of subsequent paint to expose the metal layer. Not tried it on anything quite so big but gotta be worth a go. Anyway current picture:

Back in a week or so!
