Tyranids are bloody expensive. I won't spend more than ~60% of retail but still, running a horde has set me back $60/troop choice for termagants and almost $100 per Warrior squad. To be 'competetive' you need 4-500 dollars just to get started at 1000 points. Ehh.

Orks are far from cheap to collect, unless you got a bunch of AOBR boxes
Big units of cheap troops, but expensive boxes to buy.
Daemons are relatively cheap to collect, or at least mine were. Low model count of expensive-pointswise models .

Deathwing is cheapest. Anyone who says otherwise needs to take a few moments to look at ebay.
Most expensive would be vostroyan foot guard. The models cost $5 apiece, and you're going to need at least a hundred of them...
... for your 1,000 point list...

I imagine some of the guard armies would be very expensive to field. Same with Sister of Battle. I've seen a squad of Praetorians go for like $100.00+. If you wanted to field all infantry platoons it would likely cost upwards of a few thousand I imagine.

Tyranids have been pretty expensive for me to collect so far. 50+ dollars for MCs and needing to field plenty of them for competitive lists. I have invested more than my share and I still need more.

OP, you couldn't put in a little more effort in your first post? I guess the thread description says a lot, but I'm wondering what piqued your curiosity on this topic or if you have a specific reason for asking.
Sisters of Battle have been mentioned as most expensive, but metal IG armies are very, very pricey. $3.50-$4.00 per model for a 5 point dude with a lasgun adds up quick. Death Korps of Krieg (or any Forgeworld army) is similarly expensive.
For cheapness, Dark Angels from the starter set. Two Dark Vengeance sets will get you over 1000 points of Dark Angels, and if you're splitting both sets, it's dirt cheap.

Back on topic, I play orks and you can run them cheaply using ebay and even craigslist to get models for a low cost.

I got a Sisters army for $500 ($1250 retail). I doubt I'd EVER see that for a specialist guard army.
Then again, specialist guard armies are just that... Most who have them see the the hobby and love, not for much else in my experience. Out of core factions, SoB or Tyranids probably have the highest barrier to entry from zero to 1850.
I am building a Draigo wing and it's literally $337 pre tax. Add 20 more for Coteaz if you so wish.
Also funny how the cheapest and most powerful armies in 5th are now poop tier in 6th.

SOB are so expensive. First squad ranked in at about $70. I just said, "nope", and moved on to the next army.
BTW, guard are very cheap if you know where to get them (ebay), ( PS- look for catachans, they are always 50% or more cheaper than cadians). So anyone that says guard is expensive just doesn't know where to look or are buying resin krieg .
My IG army has 300 foot soldiers, about 30 heavy weapon teams, and 8 tanks, and only cost me $180.
Deathwing are the cheapest now, especially if you get a bunch of dark vengeance models of ebay. Grey knights are a close second, but those $50 terminator boxes do rack up if you buy them direct.

Warhammer Fantasy armies need not apply - they're more expensive than 40k armies by default. When you are spending $100usd/$200aud on one 50 man core unit, of which you need 3 for your minimum Core for 3000pts... Fantasy is just flat out slowed in cost.
