I have a squad of 5 Havocs behind an Aegis Defense Line. Currently I am giving then VotLW. I was wondering if it would be better to give them T5 instead?

It depends on the opponent.

+1 Ld can save your bacon some times but if your getting shot from a distance constantly a +1T can make it harder to kill obviously.

T5 is better against any attacks that are Str6 and lower than the leadership. Less wounds taken means you won't take as many Ld tests in the first place.

+1T.

The +1Ld will only be helpful when you take more than 25% casualties, but you don't take 4 model's worth of casualties. The +T will help every time you're attacked by S3 to S6 weapons, which is going to be more frequent.

Also, the +Ld, in this case, prevents you from going to ground behind that aegis.

If you were talking about a big squad where the loss is greater from those occasional failed morale checks, then yeah, I'd be more concerned perhaps, but for a 5-man havoc squad... odds are they're going to get killed before they get run off.

On a squad of 5 Havocs you should be much more worried about simply being torrented off the board than failing morale. If someone wants 5 T4 3+ save guys dead then they can usually do it, if they don't wipe them and are counting on you failing morale then they have played it terribly. Making them T5 means they usually need to use light anti tank type weapons (i.e S6-7) to wipe you, rather than doing it with small arms which will give you a chance at sticking around against more armies. The only thing that makes this a discussion is that the T5 upgrade is expensive, and VotLW is relatively cheap (and gives you something against Marines as well right?).

Personally, I'd take a 6th body over T5, especially if the squad is manning a quad gun.
