Hello Dakka, the Title asks the question. Do Crisis Bodyguard squads need to be attached to the HQ unit at the start of the game?
I had seen in an earlier thread where a user said this was not the case? I am playing a 1999+1 and am looking to stretch the number of suits in my list and this looked to be a good way to do it.

What rule makes you think that they do have to be attached? (i.e. there isn't one)

Assumption......
I had always attached to the HQ in 4th and 5th....i have not been able to play the new Tau Codex yet. So the rule is in the BRB?

The rule isn't anywhere. There is no requirement to attach the bodyguard. So you don't have to.

There is no rule requiring the body guard to be attached.

They weren't a Retinue in 4th and 5th and they certainly aren't in 6th.
They are no different than a marine Command Squad. Just an extra HQ choice that doesn't take up a slot.

They may not have been called a retinue, but in 4th/5th, they had to be with the bodyguards and did not have the IC special rule (exactly like a retinue).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
