Hi guys just a quick question. What's the rule on blast templates and cover saves? Is it all to do with the point of impact or is there no cover at all?
Cheers

Blasts use the rules for normal shooting. Closest models, cover saves allowed, etc.

Blast *markers* have no inherent rules as regarding cover, so you follow the normal rules for shooting. Templates are the teardrop shaped ones used for flamers, usually.
You may be thinking of *barrage*, which does alter how cover is determined, however not all "blast" are "barrage"

At one time, the rulebook did actually stick to the distinction of marker = blasts and template = flamer template.
However, the dexes rarely did and now, sadly the terms are used pretty much interchangeably.

The rulebook still does, the codexes have rarely done so.
For the purposes of this forum keep ing the terms separate is a useful tool

That's just not true - hell, the Nid codex was errataed when they used template in the wrong place. (Mawloc errata)

Just from p6.
In relation to small, large markers and templates = "these templates."
"When an attack uses a template, it will explain how the template is positioned, including any kind of scatter .."
Scatter.
"Sometimes a rule will call for an object (a template ... snip) to scatter ..."
There are references to markers as templates all over the place.
Its wrong imo, there should be a strict policy about this, a marker is a blast marker and a template is the tear drop template.
Not there though.

To better represent these circumstances, Warhammer 40,000 uses a series of three different blast markers and templates:
* A 'small' blast marker (3" in diameter)
* A 'large' blast marker (5" in diameter)
* A 'template'(a tear-dropped shaped marker roughly 8" long)
It's your assumption that template in the following rules applies to the markers as well. There's no reason to assume that as the rules for Blasts and Large Blasts spell all of that out for markers.

I'm not assuming anything.
What I am bemoaning is the choice of terms and the lack of a standardised form.
Like this ...
Eldar codex, p54, eye of wrath.
... Centre a large blast marker over Yriel (snip) models from their unit at least partially under the template."
We know what a large blast marker is, but a large blast is not a template weapon, as in 40k, template is basically a range and marker in one. But, the writers frequently describe blasts as templates.
That's probably why this thread exists.
I hit you with a blast weapon, I count up models under a template, template weapons ignore cover.
Its an understandable error.

Markers and templates are interchangeable terms when you look at the language and what we use them for (flamer templates are also markers, and blast markers are also templates) - where this was easy cause for confusion before, we now have an iron-clad way to tell which template and rules to use - looking at weapon profiles. The difference lies in the specific rules Blast, Large Blast, Barrage, and Template. With these in place any of the "shapes" can safely be referred to as a marker or a template.
