Hello I have a friend who is starting to play a solid wraith guard listing with five wave serpents, my question is how can I find a way with necrons to pop one of these? I have been having quite a bit of problems countering such a solid amount of wave serpent hull points, cover saves and pen reduction. Was wondering if anyone else has encountered these problems? I'm not trying to hard counter his list but trying to play competitively without night scythes, I can't seem to beat this list in any fashion.

Main problems

Necron warriors- despite a ridiculous amount of glance capabilities (seemingly most effective against vehicles that drop pens to glances anyway) necron warriors have the range has become a huge issue. Due to the sheer ridiculous amount of shots waves serpents can out range you with, it's hard to wait for the range to be closed, especially when he is just going to out maneuver you almost always. The other option is to veiltek them close but the same problem happens, you might get lucky and pop one but you are balled up after and take an inordinate amount of fire in the following turn. Heaven forbid you go against wraith scythes...

Storm teks- seems like a solid answer but the same problem keeps happening; how the hell do you get them in range? If you deep strike them in with a veiltek you seemingly land on top of them more often than not. Again the cover saves on the vehicle really drains a lot of your glances out anyway.

Scarab swarms- I would love to say I've seen results with these guys but because their save is so garb you are relying on cover saves which again are ignored by serpent shield (not to mention cause instant death and are re-rollable with scatter lasers)

Any suggestions?
I've played a few games with Anrakyr in a CCB and I will say shooting wave serpents shields at other wave serpents is always fun but he seemingly gets focused down pretty hard after he steals the first vehicle. Annihilation barges seem good but I can't close the range without being severely out gunned but these things. Please help!

I run 3 barges and 3 scythes with a suicide court (veiltek+2x stormtek). In a TAC list at 1500, three heavy destroyers and a wraith wing round it all out. Call me TFG if you will, but cruising gives you a nice 36" threat range, even if you're snap firing. Use BLOS terrain on the approach, and remember that RAW, ignores cover doesn't affect vehicles, since wounds aren't the same as glancing /penetrating hits.

I've never heard that about ignore cover failing to work on vehicles. Could I get a confirm on that?

Annihilation barges seem to be the way to go I was just looking for other alternatives... I'm never going to consider flyers as I still think the flyer rules are just a tad Bit ridiculous.

IIRC wave serpants can only reduce pens to glances if they don't shoot the shield. So really they are just more resilient to alpha strikes. With that said they are popped just as easily as anything else, mass S7 shooting or gauss should take care of them. Also assaulting them with wraiths will destroy them.

While I don't run in many tournaments, I tend to run 2 ABs and 2 units of 3 Heavy Destroyers. The Destroyers are precise, S9 Ap2 36" Jump Infantry. They have the range, precision, and distance I need to make them effective. If I really want to get crazy with the Destroyers or Barges, I run Nemesor Zhandrek and enhance one of them (per turn) by giving them Tank Hunter.

One last note - many people I play against ask why I don't Gauss them to death with my warriors. I have tried this strategy a number of times and have yet to make it as worthwhile. That said, Zhandrek giving Tank Hunter to them would assist here as well.

Run Imotek the stormlord, and that will force them to close range to shoot you. My buddy does that to me and its very annoying.

Although I haven't had the chance to play against the new Eldar (so take what I say with a grain of salt) it seems that Necrons are one of the few armies least effected by the new wave serpents. Partially because of the amount of str 7 shooting we can send out, (you're more than likely to glance them to death), and because as you've stated our basic troops can glance them, meaning we have a higher chance than most armies to deal with them. We have the slight advantage over most armies who rely on high str (meltas/lascannons) but low shot weapons. This also means the serpent shield is less effective against us. Also, assuming you run AV13 we don't care about their high amount of str 6-7 shots. I'm not sure, that's just my opinion though.

No confirmation. There is debate onto how 'Ignore Cover' affects Vehicles. Polls have shown most agree they affect vehicles normally due to phrasing something like 'takes saves just like it took a wound' in relation to Cover.

I spam serpents, andill let you into a little secret ....

THEY DONT DIE MWAHHAHAHA

Not really. They do die. Close combat will kill them with ease, if you can get there, lots of gauss shooting will glance them to death, and if the serpent shields deactivated,(it will be if their playing em right) then shoot at em with anything high S.
