Hey all,

I wanted to see if anyone had any tips, for a new painter, on ways to apply effects on a flyrants wings. Below is a picture of my WIP Nid army,I didn't paint the SL, thats custom work someone from dakka did for me but the rest of them are my work.

This is literally the first army I have ever painted ( or anything I have ever painted) and each model I correct mistakes I made with painting on the last one.(but messing up on gants and models I have many of... is different) My concern with the flyrant is the wings. It is a lot of space to cover and having it a solid color just isn't going to cut it for a model that big. I am not overly certain how to approach doing freehand highlights and I'm open to any technique or suggestions for them.

Well, drybrushing or edge highlighting are where you're gonna be, followed by a wash or 2 to tone it back down to a more natural look. It also depends on what you choose for your wings, for how smooth or textured they'll be.

Gonna have to send you over to Youtube for this. I know I personally learn best from watching.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

I did my flyrants' wings with an airbrush. I was surprised at how realistic they turned out...it ended up giving a really nice leathery effect, which is perfect for wings of this type

Basically I just airbrushed a base dark brown and then highlighted up from there with progressively lighter browns...I did the limbs later by hand, which might not have been the best way but I couldn't think of any other way to do it
