Been Around the Block

Good evening everyone and sorry for the huge photos!

I'm having trouble finishing my bases off, so I'm looking for creative souls here on Dakkadakka.
How would you finish my bases? I'm looking for some colour or some depth to the rust, but I'm also playing around with different tufts.

I have just basecoated it with Reaper Rust Brown, but I was thinking about doing a light brown wash over it and doing a drybrush of Rust Brown again.
And you might notice the tuft on one of the Fire Warriors, I'm going back and forth likeing and dislikeing it, any thoughts about that?

Took a closer up of the larger base:

PS: Inbefore the plain and boring base comments come (), I do not want 40 models sitting on rocks so I'm doing another batch with some more scenic bases later, I just think the plain look adds alittle bit more realism to the army.

Well it depends on what style you wanto to go for. Maybe you could add some debris sticking out of the sand or maybe some techy stuff like pipes or cables.
Another often used one are skulls and bones.
Maybe some small (dead) trees. Although they wouldn't add to much different color.

Somewhere on the internet, 28mm sized bullet casings are sold. I can't for the life of me remember where from, but I think that plus some ink washing on the base would really bring it up.

I guess it depends on what you're going for with the army. I prefer lush fields/green plains/forest for mine, it's a very natural look and cleaner than the gritty urban broken city a lot of folks try to go for. My Steel Legion however, is strict adherence to fluff and the bases are rubble-strewn rock wastelands. To finish yours off, I'd go with a desert/oxidized surface look, and have a lot of brown/gray rocks with scrub/shrubs. It would look like a planet slightly more accommodating than Mars - but only just barely. Makes you wonder why they are there anyway, must be some fantastic strategic location or artifact keeping them there.

I'd put a camp fire there. Even if it's just something to represent embers. Those tau are going to be camping in one spot all game, so they might as well have a fire to make some s'mores or something. Maybe a few beers and a porn rag.

Don't worry, if they get drunk, they'll be brought up to full BS with markerlights anyways, so no biggie.

In any case, they'll need something to do to pass the time.

Lose a fight against Tau recently? This post was very funny, I actually laughed.

Show me a tau unit other than farsight that starts the turn further than 2" where they started the last turn that's actually fielded in any great quantity, and I'd show you a model that shouldn't have a hammock and a couple of oat sodas on the base.

As it is, in reality, little of tau does much movement. It only makes sense that they'd do things like dig foxholes and set up camp.
