Subject: Making saving throws?

Hey everyone,
So after playing a fun game with my friend I had a question about making saving throws.
What I read in the codex was you can only ever make one save.
Does that mean if a have a crisis suit with a 4+ save (idk if that's right) and I'm in cover giving me a 5+ cover than I can only use the 4+ cover save? Then what's the point of using cover if you can't use it to enhance your save or use a second one?
Also with a Piranha has a 3+ save and has the jink 5+ special rule what's the point of jink if you can only use one save?
Thanks

In the first situation, if the Crisis suit was hit with an AP4 or better weapon, it would not get the armour save, but would still get the cover save.
How does the Piranha have a 3+ save?
|
Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

with AP1, AP2 or AP3 shots, they'll deny your piranha an armor save, so you'd still have the jink save for a chance to save the wound.
cover saves can be taken against wounds that bypass your armor.

Okay I understand the first one now.
We'll I can't think of the piranhas save of the top of my head haha but isn't it a normal save better than 5+?

Not if you play orks, nids, or guard

You must always use the best save available.
Crisis suits have 3+ armor. Lets say it was also in a forest so it would also get a 5+ cover save.
You must use the best save available. So the suit would have to use its 3+ armor save. Unless it was hit with a weapon that was AP3 or better. In which case it would use the 5+ cover.
Thats the point of cover. Sometimes you may not be allowed your armor, or the cover may be better than your armor.
A guardsmen in a ruin will have a 4+ cover save, which is superior to his flak armor of 5+.
A Piranha doesn't have a 3+ save. its a vehicle, so it doesn't have armor saves. Being a Skimmer, it gets a 5+ jink save if it moves. Disruption Pods give +1 to your cover save. So the Jink save could be increased to 4+. Moving Flat Out would also give another +1 to your cover save, making it a 3+.

Okay that makes a lot more sense now!
I just thought I saw in the codex that the piranhas get a save but that's my mind reading things that aren't there haha

There are situations where special rules like Stealth and Shrouded can increase a cover save to be even better than your normal armour save. Ravenwing spring to mind - combining a Darkshroud with turbo-boosting Jinking bikes gives a 2+ cover save...!!
There are also weapons that ignore cover, and these can be low AP enough that you'd still get your normal armour save. So there are many circumstances where one will be better than the other, and where one won't be available at all. It's not as though armour is *always* better than cover, or vice versa.

Yeah i always laugh when people shoot at my bikerz during nightfighting. Their logic: "Nightfighting only confers either stealth OR shrouded not both, so youre at a 3+ due to jink!" and i roll 2+ covers muhahaha
The only one save ever thing means that if you fail armor save but you are in cover, you cant take both. You still have both available, you just use whichever is better given the situation. If he pens your armor, now all you have is a cover save so use that. Same idea for invul saves.

Ork bikes never need jink period. Although I suspect that will change in the next codex.

Slightly on topic.. I noticed that flyer must fire Snapshots if they Jinked. doe this apply to skimers and Bikes ( non flyer) including jet bikes.

No.
And Flyers must Snap Shot if they Evade. Evade gives a Flyer the Jink special rule for a turn.
Skimmers come with Jink, which has no snap fire requirement.
Subtly different.
